Nova is one of the old-time superheroes of the 70s. He has some pretty stereotypical gear and powers: flight, indestructibility, and a massive bucket-sized helmet that could withstand a beating from any offensive line in the NFL. Rhomann Dey journeys to Earth as the last living member of the Nova Corps from Xandar. All but destroyed Dey transfers his powers to Richard Rider, a high school student. He takes up the mantle and tackles a multitude of villains on Earth while learning to control the uniform of a Nova Centurion.  He eventually finds Rhomann Dey's spaceship orbiting the planet and with a team journeys to Xandar. Xandar is under attack from the dreaded Skrull Empire. Who should he ally himself with on Xandar to defeat the incoming Skrull menace? You guessed it: Rom the Space Knight. Can either of these two space-heroes produce a profit margin worth betting on? Rom vs. Nova which is the better speculation?

The Man Called Nova #1

Nova came into being with a host of different types of characters and superheroes in the 70s. Then, in the 80s, he was pretty much forgotten and left behind when the popularity of the X-Men dominated everything Marvel back then. Sickeningly, Wolverine was at the front of the pack. He was revived during the late 80s and into the 90s by joining a new supergroup the New Warriors. These fledgling superheroes are the perfect team for Rich Rider's seasoned superhero. Nova's first appearance was in The Man Called Nova #1. This comic was created by Marv Wolfman's writing and the visceral art of John Buscema in September 1976. That year was huge for America; both Microsoft and Apple were formed around this time, inflation was rampant at 5.75%, Nadia Comaneci scores the first-ever perfect score in gymnastics, NASA unveils the first space shuttle, and the average cost of a house was $43,400. It was a different time, a time of new technologies, social freedom, and a belief in traditional superheroes that contributes to the creation of Nova.

Long -Term

  • Grade 9.8 $999.99 last sale 11/10/2019 returned positive +52.3%
  • Grade 9.6 $379.99 last sale 11/9/2019 returned positive +56.1%

  • Grade 8.0 $119 last sale 11/4/2019 returned positive +55.4%
  • Grade 6.5 $55 last sale 11/6/2019 returned positive +29.5%

The long-term returns are Nova blast stunningly good. Can the near-term look just as promising?

Near-Term (1-Month)

  • Grade 9.8 $999.99 last sale 11/10/2019 returned negative -10.8%
  • Grade 9.6 $379.99 last sale 11/9/2019 returned positive +2.6%
  • Grade 9.4 $208 last sale 11/18/2019 returned positive +18.7%
  • Grade 9.2 $164 last sale 11/15/2019 returned positive +4.7%
  • Grade 8.0 $119 last sale 11/4/2019 returned negative -15.4%

The near-term is really starting to percolate, probably due to a smattering of new reports on potential future plans for Nova. Going out 3 to 6 months you see nothing but negatives. Now in the last month, The Man Called Nova #1 is blasting off with new fuel in its booster rockets. How does that compare with the near-mint-minus grade for another space voyager, Rom the Spaceknight?

Rom #1

The first appearance of Rom the Spaceknight in Marvel is Rom #1. It also happens to be the first appearance of his nemesis, the villainous race of Dire Wraiths. Rom #1 was created by the writer Bill Mantlo with two legends of Marvel Sal Buscema and Frank Miller in 1979. No one back then ever thought we might actually get to see Rom on the big screen. It is still in doubt, but the fact that the Nova origin is linked with his appearance is a good sign. Can this space knight spill the speculative dollars?

Near-Term

  • Grade 9.6 $85 last sale 11/5/2019 returns positive +4.8%
  • Grade 9.4 $26 last sale 11/18/2019 returns negative -35.5%

Well, apparently, Rom has a ways to go as a short-term investment. I liken Rom to the Transformers and think if given screen time he could win a huge amount of fans. The long-term returns are more promising for this book. However near-term is punching below its weight, the grade 9.4 is skewed significantly by one truly out of place sale. Be that as it may, who knows where Rom will go from here?

Conclusion:

The Speculator Core needs to stick with Nova. He or she will make an interesting character onscreen perhaps appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy 3. One can only hope and buy now. It is probably not going to get cheaper and I believe that Marvel is headed toward a space saga more than an Earthly tale. If that is the case; then The Man Called Nova #1 is the best bet, it certainly has been in the near-term. Strap in with Nova now, before you get blown away in the wake of his booster rockets and truly miss out on one of Marvel's campy but fun heroes.
