Ladies and gentlemen, please allow me to introduce to you Miss America – America Chavez!  If you never heard of Miss America (not the beauty pageant contest that takes place every year), but rather Marvel’s first Latin-America LGBTQ character to star in an ongoing series, now is the time to get to know her.  Grab a pen and paper, or your cell phone, and let’s dig in.

Vengeance #1Vengeance #1 (2011) introduces us to America Chavez.  Vengeance was a short 6-issue mini-series that was released in July 2011 by Marvel Comics.  It was written by Joe Casey and the interior pages were drawn by Nick Dragotta, both good at what they do.  It has a couple of things going for it that all collectors love; it features not one but several 1st appearances of NEW characters, a good story AND very cool cover artwork by the famous Gabriele Dell’Otto.  If you’re picky like me, you’ll grab just the 1st issue but let me tell you, the mini-series set, issues 1-6, is a good short story collection to have.  You can still find these issues in the dollar bin believe it or not and when you do get lucky, they go for roughly $60-70 plus as a full-run raw set.  Issue #1 by itself can be had for about $40-50 in high grade.  Dell’Otto comics are definitely sought after by the masses as his fan base continues to grow each and every con season.

The Meat and Potatoes

Now to the meat and potatoes of this article, there are rumors that Chavez will be introduced in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness movie.  Why would she appear?  Well, her powers and abilities are quite unique.  She possesses superhuman strength and durability, and the power of flight.  That’s cool!  But check this out, Chavez also has the power to kick open holes in reality, allowing her and her teammates to travel through the multiverse and into other realities.  Let that sink in.  Doctor Strange……. Sorcerer Supreme…… Multiverse…… ability to open holes in reality…..jump from one reality to another!  It’s definitely a possibility, right?  In the comic books, Chavez has been part of several teams – initially Teen Brigade, then Young Avengers, A-Force, Ultimates, and currently with the West Coast Avengers.  Her popularity is growing thus any of these Marvel super-teams has a good chance of appearing on the big screen, especially A-Force, if Marvel wants to go the all-female super team route (but that’s for another day)!

Show me the Money!

Where’s the money at?  The print run on this comic book is approximately 25,873 copies with only 228 total graded based off of recent CGC census.  Of the 228 copies already graded, 123 are graded 9.8 blue labels (it was less than 100 9.8s just a few weeks ago) and 9 yellow label 9.8s (probably Dell ‘Otto signatures) exist.  According to GoCollect, FMV for a 9.8 is $325 with a 90 day average of $311.  9.6s are going for $160 with multitudes of sales during the month of February for both raw and graded copies.  Believe it or not, those numbers could be on the low end and if any confirmation, ie. on the set photos, new trailer, director confirmation, new casting is leaked out or released, the sky’s the limit.  Going back further, 2018 Avg for a graded 9.8 was $202 and the 2019 Avg was $284, very decent numbers for a regular cover comic book originally priced at $3.99Vengeance #1 in a 9.8 has always been a respectable comic book like I said earlier, it has several things going for it; not just a 1st appearance and that is what gives this comic book a gradual trajectory to an all-new high.

Vengeance #1

Believe me, I know, we all have our niche, we all have our specialty when it comes to comic book collecting and speculation.  But one thing is true if you’re a believer, now is the time to jump on this comic book.  With a movie release date of May 7th, 2021 there could be numerous new heights for this comic book.  So, to reiterate:  Great story, great art, cool new characters equals a must-have in your collection.  If you don’t know, now you know.  You will thank me later…………… until next time comic fans!

Please share your thoughts and comments you have about Vengeance #1 and America Chavez.  Do you see her teleporting into the big screen in the Multiverse of Madness Doctor Strange movie?  How many copies do you have?  How many copies do you want to obtain?  Do you have the full Vengeance mini-series run?
