Moon Knight Episode 2 is in the books.  Premiering on April 6, the show featured the debut of Moon Knight’s Mr. Knight guise.  Did the comic debut of Mr. Knight rise or fall?  Let’s take a look at how the market reacted to this latest episode.

Mr. Knight

The first full appearance of Mr. Knight is widely regarded as Moon Knight (2014 series) #1.  Don’t worry – I’ll get to Secret Avengers #19 in a minute.  Whether you purchased at a high price or a low depended completely on your timing last week.  If you purchased a 9.8 on Tuesday, April 5, you paid top dollar, with prices ranging from $331 to $400.

If you waited until Saturday, April 9, you paid a little more than half of that $400, or $203.50.  That represents four sales on eBay.  However, none of the Tuesday sales were an all-time high.  That record belongs to the copy sold in August 2021 for $500.  The big winner, though, was a Bill Sienkiewicz 1:75 variant that sold on April 6 for a slashed price of $1,700 on eBay.

So, what does this tell us?

Well, this is an extremely volatile book.  It’s all about timing, and in this market that can be tough to gauge.  If you’re a buyer for this book, my advice would be to wait.  It’s not as if this is a particularly rare book, and there are MANY raw copies flying around out there that will no doubt be making their way to CGC soon.  If you’re a seller, I would watch the next four episodes of Moon Knight (and any teasers) carefully.  If Mr. Knight is poised to show up for more than just a brief cameo, that will likely be the time to get your book out there.

Secret Avengers #19, the first appearance of Mr. Knight in a comic, saw a nice bounce both going into and coming out of Episode 2.  A 9.8 sold on April 5 for a slashed $265 on eBay, while a 9.8 sold on April 7 for $250.  Again, not a peak price for this book but up a decent 7.7% from the selling price a month ago.  As with Moon Knight (2014 series) #1, the big winner was a variant, with a 1:50 Frank Quitely X-Men cover homage selling for a slashed price of $395 on eBay.

The Big Three

The big three Moon Knight books – Werewolf By Night #32, Marvel Spotlight #28, and Moon Knight #1 continued to move at a fast pace.   A 9.4 of Werewolf by Night #32 sold on eBay for $7,300 on April 6, followed quickly by a slashed sale of $14,800 on April 7, marking an enormous gain in value for that grade.

The big newsmaker, though, was the sale of a 9.8 Moon Knight #1 on eBay on April 7 for $1,400, an all-time record for that book.  These three books are viewed as the three big Moon Knight keys, and many copies are changing hands for higher and higher prices, in what is clearly a seller’s market for them.

Other Moon Knight Issues to Consider

While some are focused on the first appearance of Arthur Harrow (Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu #2) or the first appearance of Ammut (Mystic Arcana: Magik #1), there are a couple early Moon Knight appearances, ones prior to Moon Knight #1, to which you should be paying attention.  A 9.2 copy of Marvel Preview #21 sold on April 1 for $549.  The prior high sale in that grade had been $450 back in January.  It’s worth keeping an eye on, as it’s now been over a year since a 9.8 copy was on the market, selling for $1,242.

Another early Moon Knight appearance was in Defenders #47, his first in that series.  A 9.6 copy sold on March 29, one day before the TV series debuted, for a record $280, up considerably from its previous high of $200 back in July 2021.  While there were very few sales of either of these two issues, just know that many early Moon Knight appearances are showing a lift from the new series.

The only ones that aren’t showing a bounce are Spectacular Spider-Man #22, with prices down since the TV series debut, and Hulk #13, the first Bill Sienkiewicz art on Moon Knight.  Graded copies of the latter book haven’t been offered up for sale on the market recently, though.  Don’t be surprised if a graded copy fetches top dollar if it’s sold during the TV series' run.
