GodzillaHow do you top the hit movie Godzilla: King of Monsters? The only thing left is Godzilla vs. Kong! Warner Brothers is going for it in a big way, literally. Pitting their ultimate monster, Godzilla against their ultimate ape, King Kong. Some news on this movie has dropped. After all, this matchup has been brewing for a while. I am sure fans everywhere can't wait to see it. The movie Kong: Skull Island was a fun ride at the matinee though a bit brutal at times. In contrast, Godzilla: King of the Monsters wasn't brutal enough. Both movies were solid success stories making a great deal more than they cost. How does this monster matchup impact Godzilla's comic book, Godzilla #1? Can speculators cash in before the monster mania begins?

Godzilla #1

Godzilla has been below the radar for most speculators. My crazy uncle is not one of them. He has been buying Godzilla for at least 18 months and encourages me to do so. This is one of those cases where he gets to say, "I told you Norm! I told you so!" Looking closer at this book he couldn't be more right, many retailers are selling at common bin pricing. But this is no common monster book, after all, it is Godzilla #1. If the long-term results are any indication, Godzilla is a solid comic book speculation. A new movie is on the way, and the media hype will be like the blast of atomic breath putting everything in its path on fire; making speculations hot, hot, hot!

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $135 last sale 12-3-19 returns positive +0.5%
  • Grade 9.2 $42 last sale 7-31-19 returns positive +23.4%
  • Grade 8.0 $69 last sale 11-28-19 returns positive +44%
  • Grade 6.5 $38 last sale 5-14-19 returns positive +111.1%!!!

GodzillaThe returns over the long haul have been nothing short of outstanding. With grades fine plus to near mint minus fully participating in solid returns. Even the King of the Monsters would be proud of these results. How has the short-term uptick for Godzilla compared to his long-term results?

Short-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $135 last sale 12-3-19 returns negative -15.1%
  • Grade 9.0 $75 last sale 9-30-19 returns positive +16.1%
  • Grade 8.0 $69 last sale 11-28-19 returns positive +174.2%

The short-term is strong for mid-grade comics. However, the top range has declined slightly. With the movie Godzilla vs. Kong being announced that should send shockwaves throughout the grades to cause upward price movement. Godzilla #1 is the comic book to own going into this movie.

Godzilla backstory:

"In his native Japan, Godzilla has been featured in various comic books since his inception in 1954. These comics, for the most part, were black-and-white publications known as manga. The vast majority of these comics were adaptations of the films. Every film from Godzilla to Godzilla 2000: Millennium received a comic book adaptation with the exception of King Kong vs. Godzilla."

GodzillaGodzilla #1 (Price Variant)

There is also a $.35 cent variant of the Godzilla #1 that could also be quite a good investment if you can get your claws on it. Hopefully, you won't have to destroy 1950s Tokyo to obtain this rare variant. Its numbers are consistent and positive across the board. But leave a definite imprint like Godzilla's paw print.

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.0 $799 last sale 6-24-18 returns positive +76.2%
  • Grade 6.5 $440 last sale 5-16-19 returns positive +99.4%

Conclusion:

Godzilla is going to win this fight. After all, he is King of the Monsters. "All hail to the King, baby." For speculation on this movie, the $.35 cent price variant would be a great purchase, but costly to acquire. Godzilla #1 is the ticket, with grade 9.8 costing around $135; why not buy three and hold for the next Godzilla vs. Kong movie event? Then sell each gigantic step of the way: sell one into the first trailer, sell one into the second trailer, and let go of the final copy on opening month. Then your speculative bona fides (credibility) will be as strong as the smell of Godzilla's atomic breath.
