041222A-1024x536 Modern Movers 04/12/22: Ultimate Fallout #4 & Ms. Marvel #1Every few weeks we point out a few key Modern-Era comics that are moving up or down the sales charts. Most of this episode’s top moving books have one thing in common – buzz about upcoming movies.  The start of Mile Morales as the Amazing Spider-Man, Ultimate Fallout #4, ranks as the top mover in the last ten days for Modern books. There has never been a time when amazing artwork, storytelling, and investment potential have come together as they do month after month in the current era.  We are reading and collecting in an amazing time.

The classic 2011 “Direct Edition” of Ultimate Fallout #4, in a 9.8 grade, has a GoCollect Fair Market Value of $2,900.

From video games to an award-winning animated series, this alternate Amazing Spider-Man is a hit.

Two years of breadcrumbs about who will be cast in a live-action series or movie have led to steady news and steady values for this landmark Modern book.

If you happen to be digging through your long boxes to check for this book (which you should have done long ago), make sure to check if you have the newsstand edition (with the “Black Panther” in the UPC code box) because it is rare to find it in a near-mint grade, meaning the FMV could run as high as $8,100.

Dept-of-Truth-1-193x300 Modern Movers 04/12/22: Ultimate Fallout #4 & Ms. Marvel #1Department of Truth #1

Ranked #9 in the Modern Movers hot list, Image Comics’ Department of Truth #1 is up 40 spots in the past few weeks, making it one of the biggest movers.

It is a great story about what happens if an FBI agent discovers that all the conspiracy theories he has ever studied happen to be true but are covered up by the Department of Truth.  If it reminds you a bit of Erica Slaughter and monsters, that is because Department of Truth is another fantastic story by James Tynion IV.

Rumor is that this series has been optioned for a movie.  The story won a slew of awards as one of the best stories of 2021 (published at the end of 2020).  Tynion IV has said that the idea for this storyline started to take shape in 2016 in the wake of the elections that year and the way misinformation can create what people consider to be reality.

He describes the story as about the relationship between power and information. A 9.8 graded book has a current FMV of $80, which could easily move higher if news of a movie deal continues to percolate.

ASM-55-2nd-195x300 Modern Movers 04/12/22: Ultimate Fallout #4 & Ms. Marvel #1 Amazing Spider-Man #55

The second printing of this Amazing Spider-Man #55 comes in as the #10 Modern Mover (and the first printing is at #16, up 9 spots).

This 2021 book was an instant hit.  The “Last Remains” storyline was not my favorite and, as I posted at the time, Marvel’s inclination to soak faithful subscribers for a ridiculous number of “LR” number books in this series did little to move the story forward.

But, it was a treat to see this amazing Patrick Gleason art on the cover.

There are thousands of census 9.8 graded copies of each book and at reasonable prices (2nd printing FMV $50 and first printing FMV $80) this appears to be a “must-have” cover to display.  No surprise this book is selling.

Ms-Marvel-1-198x300 Modern Movers 04/12/22: Ultimate Fallout #4 & Ms. Marvel #1Ms. Marvel #1

This 2014 origin story of Ms. Marvel featuring Kamala Khan is up a massive 59 places on the hot list to land at #18!  The first solo story for our 16-year-old Pakistani-American heroine is rocketing up the charts and being snapped up by collectors and investors.

Iman Vellani is slated to appear in the Disney+ series, which will begin streaming on June 8, 2022.  The movie buzz is in full swing also with “The Marvels” slated for a 2023 movie, which will include Captain Marvel (Brie Larson).

Ms. Marvel #1 has been a steady fan favorite and held value for years, so while the run-up has a lot to do with the pending movie and series, there is less risk here than other less popular books headed to the big screen (dare we utter the word ‘Eternals’).  There could be some pushback because of the changes Marvel has made to the character in adapting her to the MCU, but it seems to be full speed ahead for young miss Khan and buyers are agreeing.

Modern books, such as these on the move now, often give us a chance to buy amazing books with huge upsides.

Let us know what you are buying or if you think these books have flown too high, too fast.

If people are looking to sell their Ms Marvel keys, they should do it sooner rather than later, because that character is going to crater in spectacular fashion, just like her new comic sales numbers. The general public has reached a saturation point with diversity agenda characters, they have no substance to them except for what their race or gender is. Yes, there are activists who will herald her arrival, but they aren’t the consumers who are needed to create broad success, they’re only in it for the activism itself.

This is a horrible take. I’m part of the ‘general public’ and I’m looking very forward to the show and movie. If the current comic isn’t selling well (which you didn’t include any evidence of ) perhaps it’s because of the writing or art and not the ethnicity of the main character. Inclusion is important… representation is important….DIVERSITY is important. I believe it is a big deal and a smart move that marvel is bringing this character to the big screen… It goes a long way to bringing their product to the true ‘general public’ and not just white males…. Just my two cents.

Jay Pele April 14, 2022 - 1:42 pm

It’s just reality. Regular consumers are sick to death of wokeness in everything and Kamala Khan exists merely to be a form of representation, to push an agenda, and her story arcs are as 2 dimensional as a sheet of paper. That’s why she’s never sold well, beyond being a 1st issue collector’s item bought by speculators, there’s no large devoted fan base clamouring for her stories, so her titles are cancelled after only a handful of issues.

Redskydigger April 14, 2022 - 6:31 pm

Hi Jay,

I agree with you but not for the same reasons. With all the changes of the different MCU characters to new identities. It’s confusing and after a time we (the viewer) cannot follow what is going on.

I thought the same thing years ago with Miles Morales, and yet here we are.

Jay Pele April 16, 2022 - 10:14 am

Miles has good comics sales due to being a well-rounded character that doesn’t exist just for the sake of representation.

Parnell April 14, 2022 - 2:03 pm

Amazing, “wokeness”? Art, story, plot, character development, etc. it matters.

Wolviefan April 14, 2022 - 10:33 pm

I get tired of people complaining about diversity and “wokeness”. If there was social media in the 1970s some would have complained about the x-men line-up after giant sized 1 came out. Stan Lee in many ways was “woke” for his time when he created mutants and chronicled their struggles in the 60s and increasing diversity with giant sized x-men 1 in the 70s was another step forward. Just to state the obvious, only creating comics that appeal to middle aged white guys (and I’m one of them) is not a sustainable model. By incorporating diverse characters, comics might pull in more young people and people of different backgrounds, helping to ensure the future of comics. Yes, some might get turned off. The happy medium is keeping legacy characters and supplementing them with diverse new characters. Lets be honest, current characters in comics represent diversity in the U. S. better than comics in previous decades, so I don’t see what the big deal is. Just my 2 cents.

“Art, story, plot, character development”

Indeed, Ms Marvel is consistently lacking in all those things.

GQGuyforComics April 14, 2022 - 11:13 pm

@jay pele , appreciate for sharing such insights. i very very much agree

If a character’s only means for existence is to satisfy the flav of the day, then it is bound not succeed. I remember when Dare Devil was considered an also ran behind all the great characters like Spider-Man, Iron Man and Cap etc… Then one day comes along the Electra story line with with great character development. Today, it is known for its blind hero, never before seen in comics. Prof. X in a wheel chair???, Tony Stark a raging alky!!! Peter parker was a low self esteem picked on nerd!!?? Marvel and Stan Lee has always pushed the envelop of character development. Who knows, maybe a Ms. Marvel will one day join that list.

nicholas Dalessandro April 15, 2022 - 6:06 am

Miles Morales, I believe has great character development above and beyond the fact that he is Black and Hispanic and that is what will make him enduring in the eyes of the reader. I recognized this when the 9.8’s were selling for $200 avg. and bought it.
I was at a very small local comicon and found a raw copy in a bin for a $1 and told my girlfriend to buy it. After Pressing, it might get 9.0 or greater!!!
If a character is going to last it has to rise above the flav of the day “woke” kind of crowd, that part I agree. Make them human with super powers, character flaws and strengths and break cultural “norms” doing it and Ms. Marvel types may stand a chance. If it is simply about creating a character because of sexual preference or skin color etc…, then it is sure to die on the vine.
Tough call on Ms. Marvel

Alan Harper April 19, 2022 - 11:37 am

The find at the local comicon is a great story. That is why I like the small shows better than the large ones – if I’m hunting for books, not just taking in the event. I agree also that diversity alone is not what make this a classic Modern key, it is the writing that makes it work.

Kenloi April 15, 2022 - 9:09 am

Without getting into politics i say hold her keys and wait. Evidence. none just instinct as a collector. If her keys suddenly drop, advice as always buy cheap, hold and wait for potential bounty. Enjoy the ride…..

Alan Harper April 19, 2022 - 11:35 am

I have to agree. I have not had this on my radar until recently so for better or worse, I’m in the have to buy catagory.
