5Every few weeks we point out a few key Modern Era comics that are moving up or down the sales charts.  Perhaps the most important thing to note this week is that books by author James Tynion IV are hot! There has never been a time when amazing artwork, storytelling, and investment potential have come together as they do month after month in the current era.  We are reading and collecting in an amazing time.

Top Mover - The Nice House on the Lake #1

Moving up to the top spot over the last month is the 2021 start of James Tynion IV's alien suspense thriller series, The Nice House on the Lake.  The story and the artwork are gripping.

It is a unique apocalyptic tale (which is really hard to pull off anymore), part Afterparty and part Stranger Things.  It is a huge victory for DC Black Label and the author has mentioned it had a local comic store pre-order of over 100,000 copies.

Tynion has a lot going on and getting your hands on a quality copy of this book makes sense.  Graded 9.8 books are creeping up to $100.  There is no reason to settle for anything less than a top condition book, raw or graded.  You will end up wanting to read all of these.

SIKTC - in the #6, #7 and #10 Modern Mover positions

I imagine this is a bit what it was like in 1964 when the Beatles held down the top five chart positions on the Billboard charts.  The Something Is Killing The Children series, also by James Tynion IV, is clearly a huge favorite.

This series is more dramatic than Nice House.  It has thankfully given us the iconically tired and deadly Erica Slaughter and the most famous mask in the age of face masks.  There is no denying that artwork is a huge contributor to the popularity and demand.  I certainly would have never predicted an 8th printing would be in this report of Modern Movers, but the cover is awesome.

In addition to the 8th printing and the original #1 book, also in the top ten is the Local Comic Store foil edition.  The great thing about seeing the 8th printing moving is that fans are able to find this book raw at a reasonable price and even graded 9.8 copies for well under $100 while the original #1 book is pushing ten times that amount.  As I have blogged about before - open another tab on your browser, go find the quality of this book you want, purchase, then come back here.

TMNT: The Last Ronin #1

Up 9 places to the #13 Hottest Modern Mover spot is the 2020 oversized Turtles opus.  Set thirty years forward, a lone surviving Turtle seeks revenge for the family he has lost.

Clearly, the slick graphic artwork (revised from the July preview edition) and the return of original storytellers Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird work for fans.  Something to be wary of is that the print run is significant, reported to be in excess of 130,000, which would put it in the same ballpark as the top three titles that month (Amazing Spider-Man, Venom, and Spawn).  Another interesting thing about this book is that GoCollect's data shows 219 books graded 9.9 or 10!  How often do we get the chance to hang a graded 10 on our wall?

I have to wonder if being oversized and not fitting standard board and covers will mean that mint condition will eventually be a premium category for this book.  The $8.99 cover price attached to this book made me pause, but my LCS owner convinced me that this would be worth the investment even if all I remembered was the 1980s movie.  I'm glad I listened.

As always, you can check out the full list of Modern Movers as part of the GoCollect Comic Market Overview section.  Enjoy the thrill of collecting during the very best age of the comic industry.
