CGC graded Modern Comics are a tough nut to crack.  There is definitely a bunch of potential when a new comic is released...complete with fanfare, buzz, and desire.  Nowadays, the release of a new comic is surrounded by a cloud of variants and an overload of highly graded census numbers.  If that’s not enough to drive you crazy, the onslaught of those highly graded comics can continue to increase until the market crashes around that single title.  Let’s take a look at some modern comics that may be a good addition to your collection!

Thanos 13 - This book has several redeeming qualities that I, both as a speculator and collector, want.  First, it has one of the most spectacular covers I have ever seen...seeing Thanos saunter past the ravaged heroes and up the steps to his thrown...classic.  Additionally, this book also has the first appearance of the Cosmic Ghost Rider, who has been popular with readers and collectors.  Prices for a 9.8 copy hover just below the $300 threshold, with a few copies selling for just over $300.

Invincible Iron Man #9 - With Tony Stark out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), collectors and speculators have been trying to find a suitable heir apparent.  The current front runner is Riri Williams, who became the new Iron Man-type hero in Ironheart, from this 2016 story arc.  Prices for 9.8 copies of Invincible Iron Man #9 are increasing from the $150 price range and are currently climbing just past the $200 mark consistently.

Howard the Duck #1 Lim Variant - Howard the Duck comics are not always the most collectible on the market, but every once in a while he scores a winner.  Gwenpool is one of the more popular new characters in the Marvel Universe and her first appearance is becoming a hot item.  The Lim variant cover shows Gwen and her unique style and is a must have for any first appearance book collector.  Although this book will cost you a premium over the standard version ($350 versus under $100), it appears to have a better growth potential long term.

Totally Awesome Hulk #22 - Featuring the first appearance of Weapon H, this is a great example of a comic that had a strong push from it's release, saw some initial gains, and has been a roller-coaster ride ever since.  Prices first hit the market around $125 and quickly peaked near $200 for a 9.8 graded copy.  The price has since dipped down to the $75 range but is now consistently topping the $100 mark over the past few months.  Totally Awesome Hulk #21 is also a great cover to collect and has the Cameo appearance for Weapon H.

Amazing Spider-Man #798 -  Many speculators are calling on Norman Osborne to step up and be the next baddie in the MCU.  With the recent announcement that Spider-Man may leave the MCU, due to a money squabble with Sony, this seems extremely unlikely.  However, if you are betting on Osborne then Amazing Spider-Man #798 (which is the issue where Norman joins with the Carnage symbiote) may be your best bet.  It has been through some ups and downs with collectors but has recently seen some market traction.  Prices have been in the $60 range for a 9.8, and we will see if the holds
