Every few weeks, I like to point out some of the books of the Modern Era which are seeing action on the sales charts.  The Movers (and their ranking) are pulled from the GoCollect market overviews and based on current sales. As such, the individual rankings change daily.  Let's discuss a few Modern Age comics that are making significant moves. Some might even be worth more of your attention. The best books for any collector depend entirely on your goals - but whether you are investing or whether you are collecting characters or stories you like - it is interesting to see what other people are buying and selling.

The Thor Buzz Continues

This train keeps a'rolling at the top of the Modern sales charts. The movie buzz continues toward the July 8, 2022 release date of Thor: Love and Thunder. Thor #1 holds the top sales spot and Thor: God of Thunder #2 holds the #3 spot.  Clearly, both books are in high demand.  The second trailer for the movie just came out and does a wonderful job of keeping us engaged and teasing Jane Foster's role.

The interest in Thor: God of Thunder #2 is because this is the first appearance of Gorr the God Butcher, who is played by Christian Bale in the upcoming movie.  There is a lot to like about the cast - from Chris Hemsworth to Natalie Portman to Bale.  Now, if the full story delivers? It could be the best thing to happen between the 4th of July and Labor Day this year.

Vengeance #1

Rocketing up the sales charts 46 spots is Vengeance #1, a 2011 book that is the first appearance of the Ultimate Nullifier, the New Black Knight, and the new Miss America.  It seems that the start of Miss America (America Chavez) is driving the attention in this book at the moment, having made her first MCU debut in the recent film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

It doesn't hurt that the cover is a strikingly good bit of Dell'Otto artwork.  Unfortunately, the pricing on this book in a 9.8 grade has recently shot over $1,000.

Paper Girls #1

It is fun to see something unique like Paper Girls #1, a 2015 book from Image Comics, crack the top ten sales list.  Currently, it sits at #9 in Modern Era sales. This story about four girls in 1988 caught between two warring bands of time-travelers has jumped onto the sales lists seemingly from nowhere.

This is an Eisner award-winning story with a slew of fantastic reviews; it is no surprise that it is slated to come to television in 2022.  You have to wonder if the sudden jump in interest reveals a positive move in that project.  This series has been the subject of some sort of option or production rumor for the past few years; the story seems too good not to be explored by all of those studios competing for fantastic content.

With 9.8 graded books hovering around a $100 value, it seems like something worth looking at now.  I can't wait to see this story (which has been favorably compared to Stranger Things) come out so that I can enjoy 1988 all over again.

New Agents of Atlas

Finally this week, is a book that is currently cracking the top twenty Modern sales list, War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlas #1The entire War of the Realms mini-series is new to me, but I found the historic connection to the original Agents of Atlas (pulled together from characters who originally appeared independently in Atlas Comics) to be understandable and a fun connection to other eras of comics.

This book is part of the much larger War of the Realms storyline with dozens of tie-in stories, including this one focusing on The New Agents of Atlas.  In this issue, the group of young superheroes is shown brought together by Jimmy Woo. He's one of the original Agents of Atlas and now headmaster for a Pan-Asian school for the unusually gifted.  Sound familiar to anyone?

While an interesting concept and storyline, the centerpiece here is the appearance of Kamala Khan throughout the first half.

Wrapping-Up

If content is king, there is no era like the Modern Era of comics for fantastic art and creative stories.  Does anyone think the New Agents of Atlas should resurface as a team and get their own series?  We will see.

Keep up with all things Modern!
