While it’s easy to tell someone to invest in all the key books of any announced movie antagonist; one has to wonder how their investments are performing now, after the movie has long passed. Is there any money left on the on the table after the uptick? Will the books continue to build value? Here we follow up on the future prospects on some of the antagonists from phase 3 of the Marvel cinematic universe.

FANTASTIC FOUR #2

For the movie Captain Marvel (2019), the antagonists were generally presumed to be Talos and the Skrulls. It wasn’t until the final twist in the movie, that the ultimate bad guy was revealed to be Yon-Rogg, who’s first appearance in the comics coincides with the first appearance of Captain Marvel in Marvel Super Heroes #12. To keep this simple, we will focus on the 1st appearance of the Skrulls, which was in Fantastic Four #2.

Below is the sales data for the CGC grades 7.5, 4.5, and 3.0, which represent a cross section of 11.4%, 50.6%, and 79.2% of the census:

Sales were flat leading up until the first trailer for Captain Marvel was released in September 2017. Between that and the release date of the movie itself on March 8, 2019, sales sky rocketed.

Interestingly enough the volume of sales drastically decreased since March 2019. This lack of sales is very concerning because either buyers aren’t buying or sellers aren’t selling. From an investment standpoint, the decrease in volume represents risk because the predictability of price also decreases; this is an increase in uncertainty. Perhaps everyone is waiting to see which way the price breaks. Caution is advised here.

Of note is the 1st appearance of Talos the Tamer (or Talos the Untamed) in Incredible Hulk #418. CGC 9.8’s of this book sell for around $50-60. Any upwards movement in value is long past.

IRON MAN #219

Ghost saw her silver screen debut in Ant-Man and the Wasp, on July 6, 2018. Below is the sales data for Iron Man #219 for CGC grades 9.8 and 9.6:

Across both grades, the book has been on a consistent decline. The value of the book in CGC 9.8 is dropping more than twice as fast as CGC 9.6. Granted, the character could show up again; however, if you’re holding out hope for an uptick from future movie appearance, the risks far outweigh the rewards. There are book in the market with more reliable positive returns. This book is a definite sell. Sell immediately.

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #102

Below is the sales data for the book in CGC grades 8.5 and 7.0, which represent 22% and 51.2% of the census, respectively:

The sales prices for this book increased in the months leading up to the release of Thor: Ragnarok on November 3, 2017. Following the release, the value of the book managed to continue its growth. The latest 8.5 sold for $651, and 7.0 for $416. Like Ghost, Hela also has the potential to show up in a future film. Perhaps this book benefits from the added value of also being the 1st appearance of Sif. Compared to the other two books analyzed above, Journey into Mystery #102 offers the best return vs risk.

BOTTOM LINE

  • Fantastic Four #2: Hold
  • Iron Man #219: Sell
  • Journey Into Mystery #102: Buy
