Long ago, before Marvel was even known as Marvel, a small publishing company called Timely began telling stories about incredible people with extraordinary abilities. This period, known as the Golden Age of Comics, saw the rise of a number of incredible characters, including Captain America and Namor. These superheroes were incredibly popular during World War II but gradually fell out of favor with readers after the war was over. When superheroes came back into vogue during the 1960s (known as the Silver Age of Comics), Marvel began to slowly, but surely revive some of Timely's most interesting Golden-Age heroes for their new interconnected universe.

Background

For those looking to invest in some of these older characters, first appearances are often out of the question. Comics created during the golden age were produced with incredibly cheap materials and were often thrown away after reading. The age and scarcity of these books, especially in higher grades, has driven prices to levels many simply cannot afford. In situations like this, many investors have begun looking elsewhere, specifically at the post-golden age books that revived the characters.

These first post-Golden Age appearances, much like reprint books, represent great alternative investments to those priced out of books like Mystic Comics #5 (CGC 9.2 FMV of $16.2k) or Black Knight #1 (CGC 8.5 FMV of $47k).

Listed below are the first appearances and first post-Golden Age appearances for some of Marvel's most famous Golden Age characters. The information was obtained through a combination of research on the Marvel Database, The Grand Comics Database, Wikipedia, The Appendix to the Handbook of the Marvel Universe, and the Complete Marvel Reading Order Project.

Certain characters, such as the Two Gun Kid, who actually stayed in continuous publication throughout the Golden Age and well into the Silver Age, were left off the list. For them, the first post-Golden Age appearance does not really have any significance because it did not follow any real gap in publishing.

I hope you all enjoy the information here and find it valuable on your own comic journeys!
