The second trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder dropped on Tuesday, May 24, giving us some extended looks at key characters in the film.  Let’s take a look at how the market reacted.

Gorr the God Butcher

After much anticipation, the second trailer for Thor Love and Thunder finally showed us Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher.  While this character’s inclusion in the film, and the actor portraying him, have been known for some time, this was the first chance for fans to see Gorr as he’ll be seen in the movie.  How did this affect sales of Thor: God of Thunder #2, Gorr's first appearance?

The week prior to the release of the trailer, twelve 9.8 copies sold on eBay.  The week since the release of the trailer is on pace for fourteen 9.8 copies to sell on eBay, a slight increase in volume of 17%.

In terms of pricing, the needle barely budged at all.  The average sale price the week prior to the trailer’s release was $424.50.  The week after, $423.40.  Pretty much a wash, all in all.  None of the sales were records.  It’s looking like – for now at least – 2021 was a peak year for graded copies of this book.

Zeus

Zeus, as played by Russell Crowe, made his debut in the Thor: Love and Thunder second trailer in a humorous bit at the end.  Let’s take a look at Journey Into Mystery Annual #1.

A 3.0 copy was the only graded seller after the release of the trailer, with a sale price of $390.  That’s 11% higher than the FMV of $350 and 30% higher than the one-year average of $300.  So, not much of a reaction by the market, but noteworthy as the continuation of a trend.

This book in this grade has been rising steeply upward since March 2020, as seen in the accompanying chart.  While many collectors prefer high grades, there is definitely a healthy market for key books like this in lower grades.

Sought after silver age comics may not see the volume of sales that hot graded current books often do, but the sales trajectory often shows a better return on investment.

First Jane Foster Thor – Past the Peak?

We saw Natalie Portman portraying Thor for the first time in the first trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder, released just a few weeks ago.  In this second trailer, we see much more of the character.  However, this did not push the price higher for her first comic appearance – Thor #1.  Rather, the opposite occurred.

The week prior to the release of the trailer saw fifteen 9.8 graded copies sell on eBay for an average price of $295.40.  The volume of sales the week since the release of the trailer is also on pace for fifteen copies sold, with an average price of $262.73, down $32.67 – or 11% - in just one week.

The general trend – as shown in the accompanying chart – is downward.  Does that mean that now is the time to buy?  I don’t think so.  There’s still time for this book to solidify at these lower prices or even move slightly upward as we approach the premiere of the film on July 8.

And what about What If? #10.  There were eight sales of copies graded 6.0 since the release of the trailer, including three sales of 9.6 graded copies for an average price of $545.  This is a book that has dropped precipitously over the last nine months.  In a 9.6 grade, the peak price was $948, reached on September 9, 2021.  Since then, it has lost 43% of its value.

While prices may stabilize in the $500 to $550 range for a bit until the film’s premiere, this is a comic that has clearly lost quite a bit of its luster for collectors.
