Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy debuted on Netflix on Friday, June 24, the same day episode 6 of season 3 of The Boys premiered on Amazon. Let’s see how the market reacted to the third season of these comic-based TV series.
The Boys – Season 3
The Boys, with its irreverent take on super-heroes, as well as the associated sex and gore, has become a big hit for Amazon. Hughie, Butcher, Homelander, Starlight, and all the survivors from Season 2 are back in the third season, and fans are thrilled. How are collectors reacting, and which comics are they targeting?
The Boys - First Appearance
The first appearance of Hughie, Billy Butcher, and A-Train was in The Boys #1, published by Wildstorm in September 2006. There are 1,895 copies in the CGC census, with 95% graded 9.0 or higher. More than a third of the copies in the census are graded 9.8.
This book has seen many peaks and valleys since 2015 when 9.8 graded copies could be had for roughly $50. The peak sale came in August 2021 when a 9.8 sold for $600 in a fixed price eBay sale. Over the ensuing three months, the book plummeted in value, dropping to $201 in a November 2021 eBay auction.
The book began rising once more and is selling very well since Season 3 premiered on June 3. (23) 9.8 graded copies have sold since June 3, with an average 30-day price of $452, higher than the 90-day and 1-year averages and the FMV. While it’s a comic on the rise, expect another drop soon. If you’re a collector interested in purchasing this book, your best bet is to wait a month or two until Season 3 is over and then pounce when no one is paying attention anymore.
First Appearance of The Seven
The Seven, the twisted group of super-heroes around which The Boys revolves, first appeared in The Boys #3. The trajectory of this book has been similar to The Boys #1, albeit at a lower price.
(19) graded copies have sold since June 3. The 30-day average now matches the 1-year average - $152 - after the June spike in sales and this is a book that is rising in value. As with the first issue, this one will likely drop shortly after the Season 3 finale.
The Umbrella Academy - Season 3
Another unique take on super-heroes, The Umbrella Academy has been a big hit for Netflix. No spoilers, but beside your favorites are a number of other characters showing up for the first time in Season 3. Let’s take a look at the market reaction.
The Umbrella Academy’s First Appearance
Released as part of the Free Comic Book Day offering in 2007, Umbrella Academy: Free Comic Book Day marks the debut of the Umbrella Academy. In the 9.8 grade, this comic had a huge spike in March 2019, rising as high as $540 in a fixed-price eBay sale. The value cratered almost immediately after and the average sale price since has hovered between $150 and $200.
Only three 9.8 graded copies have sold in the month of June, and the average price has been $179, well within the range it has inhabited since 2019.
Umbrella Academy First Issue
The Umbrella Academy’s official first issue - The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1 - appeared in comic book shops in September 2007. Like its predecessor, it saw a spike in March 2019 to $365 and then dropped precipitously in value. The price has been more volatile than the FCBD issue since, with far more peaks and valleys.
Unlike its predecessor, The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite #1 has been rising in value recently, lifting from a low of $82 in October 2021 to a current 30-day average of $148, one dollar more than the 90-day average and $15 higher than the 1-year average.
