The first episode of She-Hulk Attorney at Law premiered on Disney+ on Thursday, August 18. Let’s see how the market reacted.

Origin Story

The MCU’s latest Disney+ series, She-Hulk Attorney at Law, has had a tremendous amount of speculation regarding the characters that will appear. Not since Avengers: Endgame has there been so many heroes and villains rumored to show up. However, there have been few MCU properties as ridiculed for spotty special effects as this.

Between the two, there is no question there will be reactions in the comic book marketplace, and those reactions start with The Savage She-Hulk #1.

Created by Stan Lee and John Buscema, Jennifer Walters made her first appearance as She-Hulk in The Savage She-Hulk #1, published by Marvel and cover dated January 1980.

Like her first comic appearance, episode 1 of She-Hulk Attorney at Law deals primarily with the origin of the character. There are 12,594 graded copies of The Savage She-Hulk #1 in the CGC census. 9.8 and 9.6 graded copies represent 47% of the census population.

Despite high volumes of sales due to recent speculation, 23 copies of this book have sold since the show premiered, the highest sale coming in at a slashed $725 for a 9.8 on August 19.

This is a book that has been in freefall since selling for a high of $1,481 for a 9.8 in May 2021. Not even the premiere of the Disney+ series has made a dent in the downward momentum in value for The Savage She-Hulk #1.

It now sells for less than half of its peak. A floor is coming, but it’s anyone's guess how low that floor will be.

Turning the Corner?

Another key She-Hulk issue that has been plummeting of late looks like it may have hit bottom and is just beginning to rise again. Sensational She-Hulk #1 by John Byrne and cover dated April 1989 hit its peak in June 2021 when a 9.8 graded copy sold for $554 in a fixed price eBay sale.

Since then, the price has dropped to a current bottom of $207 in July. August, however, has seen a slight uptick, with the price rising to $212.

The key to this book’s continuing rise or reversion to a downward trend likely lies in how successfully the writers of She-Hulk Attorney at Law incorporate some of Byrne’s fourth wall breaking into the TV show.

We saw a few snippets of this in the first episode. With the character’s origin differing substantially from the comic book series, Sensational She-Hulk #1 could be poised to be the go-to book for collectors if it’s one of the aspects of the character that resonates with the general public.

Nothing can replace a first appearance. However, collectors are always looking for a more affordable second most important option. Keep an eye on Sensational She-Hulk #1; it could just be the book that benefits the most from the TV series.

First Villain Appearance

We had the TV debut of Titania in Episode 1. The character’s debut was short and (spoiler warning) she was knocked out before we even knew her name. Titania is one of the characters we knew from the trailer would be making an appearance.

Her first appearance in Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #3 has been highly speculated on, to the point where more copies sold the day prior to the She-Hulk Attorney at Law premiere than the day of the show’s actual debut. Like other She-Hulk keys, it too has been racing to the bottom, and just may have reached it.

August sales – average 9.8 price $164 - have seen a slight uptick from July – average price $156. Depending on Titania’s appearance in subsequent episodes – if she even appears again – we could see this new trend continue or it could begin to tumble again. One of many things to watch as this series progresses.
