After months of anticipation, Marvel finally released the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Let’s take a look at how the market reacted.

First Scott Lang Ant-Man

Market Reaction - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Trailer

Scott Lang’s first appearance as Ant-Man, as well as the first appearance of Cassie Lang, came in Marvel Premiere #47, cover-dated April 1979. There are a plentiful 3,318 graded copies in the CGC census. 23 copies have sold since the release of the trailer on October 24. Of the copies that sold, we had one coming very close to the record.

A 9.8 copy sold on October 29 for $2,400 in an eBay auction with only one bid. The record holder is a 9.8 selling for $2,500 in a fixed-price eBay sale in December 2021. So, we’re only 4% below the all-time high.

Market Reaction - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Trailer

Of course, Scott’s first appearance was in Avengers #181. There are 1,739 graded copies in the CGC census, and of those, eight copies have sold since October 24. The high was a 9.4 graded copy selling for $150 in a fixed price eBay sale on October 29. That’s only a slight uptick in volume over the seven copies that sold the two weeks prior to the trailer’s release. That’s also down 67% from the all-time 9.4 high of $250 set in a fixed-price eBay sale in August 2021 and again in May of this year.

Considering that Scott isn’t yet a hero in this book, I wouldn’t expect sales to suddenly skyrocket any time soon. The market has decided that Scott’s first appearance as Ant-Man is more important than his first overall appearance.

First Cassie Lang Stature

Based on what we’ve seen in the trailer, Cassie Lang looks to be taking on a more prominent role in the MCU. Her first appearance as the hero Stature was in Young Avengers #6. There are a relatively low 859 copies in the CGC census. 11 of those graded copies have sold since the release of the trailer. It’s a nice pickup in volume from the four that had previously sold in October.

The high was a 9.8 copy selling for $200 in a fixed-price eBay sale on October 29. Down 65% from its all-time high of a slashed $630 set in May 2021, this book could be considered a buy opportunity if we receive any evidence of a Young Avengers show or movie.

As it stands, even Cassie showing up in costume in the trailer hasn’t been enough to drive prices higher.

No Sales

Market Reaction - Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania Trailer

A number of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania keys had no recorded sales of graded copies to accompany the release of the trailer. Among those were Incredible Hulk #156, Tales of Suspense #94, and Tales to Astonish #44. Incredible Hulk #156 is the first appearance of Krylar, the character portrayed by Bill Murray, who made an appearance in the trailer. Tales of Suspense #94 is the first appearance of M.O.D.O.K., a character we know will be making an appearance in the film, although he was not to be seen in the trailer.

Tales to Astonish #44 is the first appearance of the Wasp, although it’s the Janet Van Dyne version of the character, and the pricing on this book is very much baked in at this point. The market didn’t appear to jump on any of these books. Perhaps people are waiting for more news on M.O.D.O.K. before jumping on that one. Krylar would appear to be a one-off and I would be surprised to see sales jump any higher than they already have prior to the release of the film.

A Bug in the Mix?

The surprise comic gaining momentum due to the trailer release for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is Micronauts #1, cover dated January 1979. 19 of the 3,422 graded copies have sold since October 24, roughly the same number as sold previously in October. The high is a 9.8 copy selling on November 4 for a slashed $340. While like most comics, this book saw higher value in 2021, its peak came in April 2019 when a 9.8 sold in an eBay auction for $535. So, what’s driving the sales volume for this book? Rumor and conjecture primarily.

With the film taking place in the microscopic quantum realm, many feel that it could mean the appearance of some Micronauts. Keep in mind, however, that Marvel only retains rights to a few of the characters from the Micronauts series, those being Arcturus Rann, Marionette, and Bug.

If I had to put my money on which, if any, of these characters could appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, it would be on Bug. He’s a distinctive-looking character who has also been involved with the Guardians of the Galaxy, and could very well serve as comic relief, a la Rocket.
