In my last article, I looked at "Party Hard, Shred Harder", a box-set of Magic: The Gathering trading cards with art based on the concert poster genre. Wizards of the Coast is now releasing another set titled "Our Show Is On Friday, Can You Make It?".  This time, the cards are specifically based on the aesthetics of psychedelic concert posters.

Secret Lair Drop Series

Like "Party Hard, Shred Harder", this set of five cards is also released through the Secret Lair Drop Series. It's printed to order, but only available to purchase from April 26th until May 28th, 2021. The set is priced at $29.99.

The artists of these Magic: The Gathering cards have all designed actual concert posters. Here's a look at each card, the artists behind them, and some actual concert posters they've designed as well.

Wrath of God

The game's classic white board wipe, Wrath of God features art by artist Jermaine Rogers.

Rogers has designed numerous posters for many artists. His work has graced the posters of Nine Inch Nails, Childish Gambino, Queens of the Stone Age and Ween.

One noteworthy poster by Rogers is for the Foo Fighter's 2017 performance in Washington, DC. This was the opening night of the tour, and the first concert ever at The Anthem. Inspired by "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, the poster design commemorates the event, reading "You're the star of the very first show at the Anthem in Washington, DC!".

Preordain

One of Magic's many iconic blue card-draw spells, Preordain was illustrated by artist Alexis Ziritt. For one mana, the card lets you scry two and then draw a card.

Ziritt has created art for many high profile bands, such as Slayer, Mastodon, and Metallica. One stand-out concert poster is for Phish's 2018 two-night run at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco.

Decree of Pain

Artist Ian Jepson illustrated Decree of Pain, an eight-mana black board wipe with cycling.

Besides working on projects for companies like Marvel, Penguin Random House and Miller Lite, Jepson has designed numerous concert posters. Death Panthers, Tweak, and Saint Agnes have all had posters illustrated by him. On his website, Jepson shows his design process for many pieces, including this 2015 poster for Spoon.

Gamble

For the set's red spell, Gamble, artist Sam McKenzie created a design with classic fantasy vibes.

As an Australian-based illustrator, McKenzie's work includes designs for many Australian bands/musicians - including Velociraptor, Jeremy Neale, and DZ Deathrays. This poster for a gig by Australian band, White Walls, is a great representation of McKenzie's art.

Nature's Lore

Artist Jeff Soto illustrated this art for Nature's Lore, a two-mana green spell that lets you search your library for a forest card and put it into play.

Soto is a California-based artist and has designed concert posters for many high profile bands - including Metallica, Phish, and Mastodon. One prime example of his work is this poster for Pearl Jam's 2014 Australian tour. Depending on whether you want the art to show a cat or owl, you can flip the poster accordingly.

Future Concert Cards

Between this and the previous "Party Hard, Shred Harder" set, it's clear that Wizards of the Coast are comfortable exploring various genres of concert poster art through Magic cards. These sets are the perfect coming together of two types of collectibles, and hopefully they release more in the future.
