THE MANY DC PROJECTS OF HBO MAX

HBO Max is banking on the DC Universe, it seems.

Before the Justice League Snyder cut blew fanboy minds, the DCU app gave us Doom Patrol, Star Girl, the animated Harley Quinn, and the short-lived Swamp Thing. Along with those switching to HBO Max, fans have been teased with a potential Green Lantern live-action series, the animated Aquaman: King of Atlantis three-episode series based on the James Wan film, Vertigo's DMZ, and Super-Hero High. Since that list was posted, there have been more rumors and announcements, and the news is all about the Dark Knight.

There's Batfleck making a resurgence in the Snyder cut of JL, Matt Reeves' The Batman film in production, and Michael Keaton supposedly reprising his role from 1989's Batman franchise. All three of those tidbits have fueled speculation for a number of Bat-related rumors from the far-fetched (Ben Affleck and Jared Leto filming a Batman/Joker movie for HBO Max) to the plausible (Keaton headlining a Batman Beyond feature film).

Having three Batman actors in the DCEU at the same time has led to a guessing game among fans. Which Batman will ATT/Time-Warner get behind? Affleck, Keaton, or Rob Pattinson? It appears the latter may be in the lead thanks to the recent announcement that Matt Reeves will be filming a Batman spin-off for HBO Max.

NOT ANOTHER GOTHAM, PLEASE

Not much is known about the series other than it will be directly related to the upcoming The Batman, which Reeves is directing, and it will focus on the Gotham City Police Department.

Of course, this sounds a lot like the polarizing Gotham television show. Reeves GCPD series will be set in The Batman timeline. It will be centered on the corruption inside the city's police department. Sounds an awful lot like Gotham. I can't imagine Reeves or the ATT/DC executives wanting a reboot of the Fox show. It would seem likely that Reeves' GCPD series will have an adult Batman in the shadows with Jeffrey Wright possibly reprising his The Batman role as Jim Gordon.

LOW RISK, MODEST REWARD

Gotham had virtually no impact on this issue. Then again, this is not exactly a key issue.

Aside from it being the first series, albeit four issues, to star Jim Gordon sans Batman, there aren't any major firsts. Still, if Reeves uses this as the basis for the new HBO Max series, prices will get a bump.

The beauty here is that there is little to invest. The last time a graded copy sold it was in 2011. Even then, that 9.8 only brought $15. If you want to opt for raw copies, the entire four-issue run sells for between $5-$10. Chances are good you can find this in the dollar bin at your local comic shops.

Another potential inspiration for Reeves's upcoming Gotham PD show could be another four-issue limited series, 1998's Batman: Gordon of Gotham.

Like GCPD, the investment gamble is almost nothing. There hasn't been a graded copy traded online since 2010 when a 9.8 sold for $18. Looking for a raw, ungraded copy? The entire series tends to sell for $15 or less.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Even if prices inflate for both GCPD and Gordon of Gotham, neither title is going to amass serious gains. Still, it's worth a total investment under $30 to collect all eight issues from both series. Both of these are low-risk investments - do you have either?
