LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – Initial Thoughts

042622C-1024x536 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Initial ThoughtsI played the original LEGO Star Wars and LEGO Star Wars II back in 2005 and 2006 respectively (oof) and have logged countless hours on both. But we are here for the newest game in the series, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

My friends and I would play for hours trying to collect every stud, find every collectible, unlock every character, and otherwise try to 100% complete the game (then go back and do it all again once we did). I can’t say I played much of either in the last 15 years or so, but I have fond memories of both games. There were 3 additional LEGO Star Wars games after that, but I don’t recall playing them. But let’s get into the subject of this blog – LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Movies-TV-3_21_2022-10_40_23-AM-300x163 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Initial Thoughts

Initial Reaction

So far, I have completed episodes I-III, and I really like what I see (the following review is based solely on episodes I-III of the game, which is all I have played). First of all, the graphics are simply incredible. I am playing on the Xbox Series X and a 4k tv. A LEGO game has no right looking this good, but you won’t hear me complaining.

A fair amount of voice actors, at least from Cartoon Network’s The Clone Wars, have reprised their roles. These voices include Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Billy Dee Williams as Lando , Cathrine Taber as Padme, James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan, Matt Lanter as Anakin (who is arguably a better Anakin than Hayden Christensen), and many more. On the other hand, it sounds like Telltale Games had their staff voice a few of the no-name background characters that you can interact with. I think it’s great, as it fits with the tone of the game, but others may not agree. 160655-games-review-lego-star-wars-the-skywalker-saga-review-screens-image3-miqzwjk3wl-300x200 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Initial Thoughts

Gameplay

At the start of the game, you’ll choose an episode to play. From there, if you have played this episode before, you can open up the Holoprojector to fast travel to other locations or continue in the area in Free Play. Or, if it’s your first time in this episode, it will load in the first mission automatically.

In both Free Play and Story Mode, you can sort of travel to each destination directly from the ship, though it looks like that is only reserved for nearby planets that fit within the time period of the movies.  XL_hero_Gameplay_trailer_desktop-300x188 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Initial Thoughts

A semi-open world LEGO game is pretty cool, but I do miss walking around the Cantina that slowly fills with all the characters I have unlocked. Speaking of the Holoprojector, this is the way (ha) to purchase characters, ships, upgrades, and extras, as well as view the entire map for the solar system. It’s great to have it all in one place, but I prefer purchasing these items from an NPC like Dex at his diner.

Another thing I am not a huge fan of is the map. Let’s say you are in the Jedi Archives, and you would like to look at that map specifically. You need to click on Coruscant, choose the Federal District, then Jedi Temple Exterior, then Interior, and finally Interior again on the correct room (it’s only labeled Interior). That’s an absolute pain, but to be fair, you will likely not be looking at that map too frequently. lego-star-wars-skywalker-saga-main_c0051eca-300x300 LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga - Initial Thoughts

Each episode seems to be skimming over the contents of the movies more so than original games, as far as I remember. That said, the game itself has a ton of content (as it does cover 9 movies) as well as things to collect, you will hardly be bored of this game any time soon.

Conclusion

If you haven’t already, I highly suggest you pick up a copy of this game. So far it is a ton of fun, and I can’t recommend it enough. Especially if you are the type to collect and complete everything a game has to offer.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga was released on April 5th, 2022 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4/5, and Xbox One/X/S.
