From the CW to the DCAU and video games, King Shark has been making waves. Now that he is getting a spotlight on the big screen, Superboy #9 has become a very hot issue.

“KING SHARK IS A SHARK”

Could King Shark be the next Groot? Considering the director, it is a feasible scenario. When we consider what James Gunn did with Groot and a now-famous catchphrase, the potential is there for King Shark to steal the show in Suicide Squad 2.

The makers of Justice League Dark: Apokolips War seemed to have acknowledged the King/Groot connection, giving King Shark the now-famous line among fans, “King Shark is a shark.” While it was a clear take on the Guardians of the Galaxy character, it is by far the most memorable line from the hit animated movie.

With James Gunn at the helm, I don’t necessarily expect King Shark to become an aquatic Groot, but he will get a major push. What’s more is that he will help us forget the dismal failure of the live-action Killer Croc from the original movie. Gunn will do what he does best - inject King Shark with personality, and that will make him a fan favorite.

Add it all up and throw in his role in the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game, and his first two appearances have become highly collectible.

King Shark First Full Appearance

SUPERBOY #9

At the top of the heap is Superboy #9. The second overall and first full appearance of King Shark is edging closer to doubling in value. In August alone, this issue at a 9.8 has not sold for less than $117 with a high of $160. That gives it an August average of $138. From January to July, this had been an $80 comic, give or take. A year ago, it held a fair market value of $103, and 2018 saw it bring $60.

Since this isn’t the King’s first live-action adventure, prices had already been slightly inflated. After all, his initial live-action take was in The CW’s The Flash, and appearances on the small screen don’t affect values like the movies.

First Cameo

SUPERBOY #0

For the fan looking to save a few dollars, there is Superboy #0.

Technically, this is the first appearance of the man-beast. Since it was in cameo and King Shark was not on the cover art, sale prices are much lower. The last 9.8 to sell online went for $32 in July 2019. So far this year, the highest price for any grade this year was $45 for a 9.2.

THE VERDICT

I feel like I say this with every character in Suicide Squad 2, but King Shark has the potential to become a major attraction. I expect that Gunn will breathe a new life into the character, and we could see the big man-thing gain enough traction to star in his own comic series. That would up the ante even more on those key appearances.

Out of all the new additions to the Squad, I have the highest hopes for King Shark, and I highly recommend investing in both these key issues. If you can find some deals, go for it.
