The First Black Captain AmericaAs we all know, Falcon & The Winter Soldier will not only explore Steve Rogers' legacy, but also likely end with Sam Wilson take up the mantle of being Captain America. Casual fans believe that Sam will serve as the first Black Captain America; however, he will actually be the second.

During the Falcon & The Winter Soldier, we'll likely learn more about Weapon Plus, the covert U.S. government program that produced super-soldiers, including the most famous of them all, Captain America. Steve Rogers served as Weapon 1, created during the early days of the program. If we learn more about the origins of the Weapons Plus program in Falcon & The Winter Soldier, we may also witness the story of Isaiah Bradley first told in Truth: Red, White & Black.

Truth: Red, White & Black #1: The First Appearance of Isaiah Bradley

Truth: Red, White & Black #1 is informed by the "Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the African American Male," a racist and illegal experiment conducted by the U.S. government during the first half of the 20th century that resulted in the deaths of 128 black men. Similarly, Truth: Red, White & Black tells the story about how the government subjects 300 black American soldiers, including Isaiah Bradley, to illegal experimentation in an attempt to recreate Captain America. Only Isaiah survives. The government covers up the experiments by telling the public that the 300 soldiers died on the battlefield.

First Black Captain AmericaIsaiah steals one of Captain America's costumes and leaves on a mission to end the Nazi super-soldier program. He successfully assassinates the Nazi eugenicist, Dr. Koch, but is captured and brought before Hitler. Eventually freed, Isaiah becomes a living legend, revered by Black superheroes, including Sam Wilson.

Truth: Red, White & Black #1 has a beautifully stark cover. The interior artwork, however, is not superb in my opinion, and doesn't match the seriousness of the story. The poor quality of the artwork (again, just my opinion) is one of the reasons why I'm hoping Falcon & The Winter Soldier tells Isaiah's story and does it justice.

In terms of value,  the FMV of a CGC 9.8 copy of Truth: Red, White & Black #1 is approximately $200; however, you can purchase a raw, high-grade copy for $20 or less on eBay. This is a low-risk investment and such a copy would be a good candidate to submit to CGC. In addition, according to the CGC Census, graded copies of Truth: Red, White & Black #1 are rare; specifically, CGC has only graded 135 copies of this book. If Isaiah appears in Falcon & The Winter Soldier, you can be sure those prices will rise.

The Crew #1: First Appearance of Josiah X, Isaiah's Son

Another highly affordable book that speculators should consider is The Crew #1. The Crew #1 contains the first appearance of Josiah X, Isaiah Bradley's son, and the uncle of Elijah Bradley, aka Patriot. Josiah, like his father, is a veteran having served in the Vietnam War and later joining the Black Panther movement in the U.S.

In my opinion, this book is also worth investing in since it's so inexpensive. You can purchase raw, high-grade copies of this book for less than $10 on eBay.
