After Venom: Let There Be Carnage’s massive opening weekend, it seems as if the movies (at least in the United States) are well and truly back, and boy does that feel good to write. With Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures committed to releasing the remaining MCU movies this year (Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home), it appears as if Marvel Studios will be looking at some new faces to hit the big screen in the next few years. Today, we ask if the MCU's next breakout star could be an obscure Marvel hero by the name of Union Jack?

Who Is Union Jack?

Created by Roy Thomas and Frank Robbins, Union Jack has had a few different names underneath his iconic mask. The original Union Jack, James Montgomery Falsworth first appeared in Invaders #7, before making his official cover and costume debut an issue later. The second Union Jack, Falsworth’s son, Brian made his debut in Invaders #18 before suiting up in his father’s fairly iconic superhero get-up a few issues later, in Invaders #21. The third Union Jack, a man by the name of Joseph Chapman, made his own debut in Captain America #253

Is Union Jack the MCU's Next Breakout Star?

Now, James Montgomery Falsworth is not completely foreign to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, the character made a blink and you’ll-miss-it appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger, where he was portrayed by J.J. Feild.

Over the last few months, there have been some rumblings regarding the character’s appearance in the MCU over the next few years, with the upcoming Disney+ show - Secret Invasion - being the most likely place. The Illuminerdi, where the rumour stemmed from, does not, however, rule out the chance of the character appearing in Captain America 4, as part of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s underground superhero team.

What To Invest In...

Where would you even start with collecting and investing in a character like Union Jack? Someone who has had so many different identities? Well, for starters, none of Union Jack’s comic book debuts are particularly expensive. Union_Jack_8

A 9.8 grade of Invaders #7 was last sold in October of 2019 for $1,000 (USD). On eBay at the moment, you can find a few 9.6 grades for just under $750 (USD). Falsworth’s first cover appearance recently sold for just under $400 (USD). If we were to look at Invaders #18, which featured the first appearance of Falsworth’s son, Brian, a 9.8 grade sold in April for a mere $210 (USD). Meanwhile, Chapman’s first appearance in Captain America #253 last sold in May for $160 (USD).

All these books are ridiculously attainable as of right now. However, with so many different first appearances, it is rather tough to see which specific debut will be worth more by the time the character actually debuts. If I were to look into Union Jack, I would gobble up those cheap, under $1,000 copies as they’re almost always going to grow in value, no matter if the character appears or not. Personally, I believe the MCU will use Falsworth's son Brian as the Union Jack, due to the narrative logic. All that said, the value of the character’s definitive debut (Invaders #7 & #8) will continue to rise.
