Since it has been seven years since the Dark Knight Rises; it is time for Hollywood to create yet another version of Batman.  The Matt Reeves movie Batman (2021) has already cast Robert Pattinson as our "shining" new Dark Knight. Every superhero needs a villain, Reeves has apparently created a Film Noir detective story with Riddler as one of the villains. Gee, are there any DC characters out there other than Batman that have been rebooted so many times? Answer: nope! Batman is a perennial favorite to reboot. The bottom line: this constantly creating a new Batman every decade is getting old quick. But at least we will get to see another version of the Riddler. Can the Riddler produce speculative profits? Well, Riddle me this: "I have branches yet I have no leaves, no trunk, and no fruit. What am I?"

Batman #171

The first Silver Age Riddler was created in Batman #171. This book was written by Jack Schiff with pencil work by Carmine Infantino, Bernard Baily, and Sheldon Modloff. Over the last six months, there has been an upward movement on prices with this book. Though admittedly the sample size is relatively small. Hopefully, the upcoming movie Batman (2021) will boost the Riddler and his first appearance in the Silver Age.

Short-Term (6-Months)

  • Grade 8.5 $1,500 last sale 11-4-19 returns positive +15.8%
  • Grade 6.0 $457 last sale 7-31-19 returns positive +7.9%
  • Grade 4.5 $330 last sale 11-8-19 returns positive +4.8%
  • Grade 3.5 $240 last sale 11-21-19 returns positive +34%

The short-term returns on Batman #171 are solid with a variety of grades participating in price appreciation. We can only hope that Matt Reeves can figure out the riddle of a good movie prior to the premiere of Batman (2021), don't hold your breath Bat-Friends. This thing is probably going to blow up like the Hindenberg. However if Reeves finds his inner director, and Pattinson doesn't glow like an effeminate vampire we might have the makings of a whole new direction for Batman. The good news? Apparently, Reeves is trying for more of a detective story, we shall see folks, we shall see. Did you figure out the answer to the riddle?

"I have branches yet I have no leaves, no trunk, and no fruit. What am I?"

(answer: a bank)

Batman #2

Apparently, Batman (2021) will be based on a story called "The Court of Owls." The first cameo of "The Court of Owls" is in Batman #2. This comic book also has the first appearance of The Talon (villains). The dynamic duo of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo create this 2011 crossover story that spans several different comic books in DC. Needless to say, it should make an interesting and refreshingly new movie for Batman; even if he still does have trace elements of glitter on his Bat-Cape.

Short-Term (6-Months)

  • Grade 9.8 $60 last sale 11-12-19 returns positive +3.5%
  • Grade 9.6 $35 last sale 11-23-19 returns negative -8.2%

Conclusion:

These numbers are inconclusive at best for Batman #2. The only real option is to bet on the original Riddler in Batman #171. You could buy Batman #2 in grade 9.8 and roll the dice, or purchase Batman #171 and start making money immediately. It is painfully obvious the Silver Age Riddler is a solid pick. Hopefully, trailers will promote the movie and The Talons part in that movie; then Batman #2 might pop. Don't be blinded by a great cover and superb art of Capullo. Grab onto the first appearance of the Riddler and hold on for the ride. The Silver Age is hard to beat as an investment.
