How Has the Market Responded to Silk: Spider Society?

112122C-1024x536 How Has the Market Responded to Silk: Spider Society? On November 17, we received confirmation that Amazon is indeed moving forward with a live-action TV series for Silk. Silk: Spider Society will focus on Cindy Moon, a superhero who develops powers similar to Spider-Man’s after she’s bitten by a radioactive spider. Since this is Amazon, we should anticipate a big-budget production.

As we all know, like the stock market, the comic market has cooled dramatically during 2022. Has the market responded to news about Silk in a similar fashion? Let’s take a look at three key issues.

Amazing Spider-Man #4 (2014): 1st Full Appearance of Silk

This is the go-to book for Silk. A CGC 9.8 copy of this book peaked at $480 in May 2021, but, like most other comics, has dramatically cooled off since then. During the first two weeks of November, this book was selling for just $200 and had lost more than half of its value in a year’s time. In addition, only one to two copies were selling per day.

When the news broke confirming rumors about Silk’s TV show, the volume of sales jumped dramatically. For example, during the past two days, at the time of this writing, 16 CGC 9.8 copies were sold on eBay alone. In addition, the value of the book has also jumped since the news broke. One copy sold for $285, or roughly a 33% increase in value.

Like most modern books, one issue with this book is the high CGC count; there are 5,728 CGC 9.8 blue labels and 646 CGC 9.8 yellow labels on the GCG Census.

Amazing Spider-Man #1: 1st Appearance of Silk in Cameo

Silk appears for the first time in cameo on the last page of this issue. I’m a person who thinks a first appearance is a first appearance, but clearly the market values Amazing Spider-Man #4 more. Still, this is still a key issue for Silk.

The news about Silk’s show hasn’t moved the needle too much in terms of sales volume. Specifically, two CGC 9.8s sold on November 17th on eBay; one sold for $84, and another sold for $115. On the other hand, although sales volume was low in comparison to Amazing Spider-Man #4 on November 17th, 9.8s had been selling in the $50 to $60 dollar range earlier this month. So, these are strong sales in the wake of the news.

At this time, a CGC 9.8 copy of Amazing Spider-Man #4 is still pretty affordable for many collectors; however, if Amazon’s show is successful, and Amazing Spider-Man #4 becomes out of reach for some collectors, then Amazing Spider-Man #1  could become an affordable fallback option.

Silk #1: 1st in Silk’s Own Series

A third key for Silk is Silk #1, the first issue in her own self-titled series. This issue saw some movement after the news release. Specifically, three CGC 9.8s sold on November 17th and three 9.8s sold on November 18th. One of these copies sold for $112, which is considerably higher than what it had been selling for earlier in the month (around $70). It appears as though the market prefers this issue over her first appearance in cameo in Amazing Spider-Man #1 most likely due to the fact that she’s the focus of its cover.

While we didn’t see a tidal wave of people buying Silk key issues in recent days, we did see a ripple. This is further evidence that the comic book speculation market hasn’t died off completely.
