Copper comicsOver the past two weeks, Spawn #1 (1992) has held down the top-selling book position. The Copper Age of comics is generally considered to be the twenty years between the mid-1980s and the early 2000s.  GoCollect tallies the top-selling book of each era on a regular basis.  This post highlights a few top movers; you can decide if you might be a buyer or a seller of the hottest Copper comics.

Spawn #1 is the top Copper Age mover

The landmark breakaway venture from Todd McFarlane is at the top of our charts.  Spawn has proven to be a worthy workhorse for McFarlane to build Image Comics around.

There are over 9000 Census books graded 9.8, which could explain the reasonable $180 GoCollect Fair Market Value.

Spawn #9

While Spawn #1 holds the top spot in our sales rankings, Spawn #9 has also moved up to be the 15th to moving book.

Spawn #9 has a stunning cover and a script written by Neil Gaiman (I highly encourage you to check out his course on writing on Master Class, where he talks a lot about his classic graphic novel, Sandman.)

Spawn #9 is the first appearance of Angela and Medieval Spawn.  The movement of Spawn #1 and #9 likely have to do with Angela being rumored to have a crossover role in Thor: Love and Thunder.

New Avengers #7 in the #7 position

Not on a lot of collectors' radars, this 2005 book jumped 20 positions to get to the 7th-hottest-selling book of the past two weeks.  This Brian Bendis story is the start of The Illuminati - a secret consortium of the most powerful and smartest earth has to offer.

Iron Man brings together Reed Richards, Namor, Black Bolt, Doctor Strange, and Professor X.  This group is coming to theaters and is all the buzz, so it's no surprise this book is in demand.

With only 483 Census 9.8 graded books on the market, it may be something to run to your LCS and see if you can find a great condition raw copy.

Carnage is Coming

All the Carnage first appearance books are moving.  Amazing Spider-Man #361, the first appearance of Carnage, the offspring of Venom, has been as high as the #8 top-selling Copper Age book.

Carnage appeared in the 2021 Venom 2 movie (which managed to gross over $500 million while the entire world was largely staying out of theaters).

A 9.8 graded book has an FMV of $600, but these values trended down from the 2021 movie hype.  But, now that Venom 3 is confirmed to be in development (April 2022), the draw of these initial appearances is back in focus.

The other two books in the initial Carnage storyline are also in demand - Amazing Spider-Man #363 comes in as the #20 top seller and Amazing Spider-Man #362 comes in as the #24 top seller.  Interestingly, ASM #362 has 5 Census 10.0 graded books.  I would love to see one of those!

The Gambit gambit

Rocketing up the sales charts 60 spots, X-Men Annual #14 has held down the #23 position.

This 1990 book is arguably the first appearance of Gambit, one of the most interesting characters of the Marvel mutant world.

X-Men #266 is also moving up the sales charts, so clearly the feeling is that Gambit will be getting his day in the sunshine (or red carpet) soon.  I like picking up the X-Men Annual here, although a 9.8 graded book already has an FMV of $325.

This Chris Claremont story is recognized by CGC as a cameo appearance and X-Men #266 as Gambit's first appearance, although X-Men Annual #14 has several panels of Gambit in action and was published before X-Men #266.

The storyline puts the regular series before the Annual story, thus the debate.  There has been talk of Gambit getting his own film since 2014.

With Hugh Jackman as Wolverine having run its course, you have to wonder if Gambit will be the place Marvel makes new magic happen and a new actor gets a career-making role.

Which Gambit book would you rather have?  Happy hunting for these treasures!
