Peanuts Vol. 2 #13Media Release -- The Cartoon Art Museum has received another generous $30,000 matching grant from The Charles M. and Jean Schulz Grant in support of the museum's ongoing programs and exhibitions. Contributions to The Sparky Challenge made to CAM between now and December 31st, 2013 will be matched dollar for dollar up to the total amount of the grant.

Since last summer, visitors to the gallery have been treated to retrospectives of Chuck Jones, Sam Kieth and Will Eisner, celebrated 30 years of Love and Rockets and 75 years of Superman, marveled at the stop-motion models used in ParaNorman, explored contemporary visual storytelling, peered inside a globe-trotting sketchbook, and received an advanced look at the Thrilling Adventure Hour graphic novel. In addition, the museum presented its annual benefit at Pixar Animation Studios, played host once again to the Latino Comics Expo, dimmed the lights for a 30th anniversary screening of The Last Unicorn, held a zombie-themed blood drive, and helped kids and adults discover their artistic talents with ongoing cartooning and manga classes. And we're already looking ahead to our upcoming Ronald Searle tribute and Sandman retrospective.

However, the museum faces challenges as well. Currently museum is facing a significant rent increase, and with the improvements in the Yerba Buena neighborhood, including the expansion of the SFMOMA, the future site of the Mexican Museum and more transit options with the future underground T-Third Street Muni line and the Transbay Terminal, the museum hopes to continue to operate in this cultural neighborhood. Your contribution is essential to ensuring our future in San Francisco.

Dubbed the 'Sparky Challenge' as a way to spark people's attention, and because 'Sparky' was Schulz' nickname," the Cartoon Art Museum has benefited over the years from Sparky's generosity with an Endowment gift in 1987, and continued assistance through matching gifts, donations of original artwork and his insight and advice. Although Schulz passed away in 2002, his legacy lives on through the Charles M. Schulz Research Museum and the charitable works overseen by his widow, Jean, who continues to be one of the Cartoon Art Museum's most dedicated supporters.

If you've ever considered making a donation to the museum, now is the time. Contributions to the Sparky Challenge made to CAM now through December 31, 2013, will be matched dollar for dollar up to the total amount of the grant.
