The current Hake's auction offers some iconic first appearances, Bronze Age grails, and LOTS more to watch.  Over 1000 comics, in fact! Check out some of their featured offerings, including Fantastic Four #1, Hulk #181, X-Men #94, and a whole bunch more. What will you be bidding on?

Fantastic Four #1

This is it. This is the book that gave us the first appearances of Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), Human Torch (Johnny Storm), Invisible Girl (Sue Storm), and The Thing (Ben Grimm). It also ushered in the Marvel Age of comics, which few can argue changed the trajectory of comic book writing forever.

While many other now-iconic comic book characters were tested out before landing their own series, the Fantastic Four debuted with a splash in their own book right from title #1. Needless to say, that gamble paid off.

Featured in this auction is a Fantastic Four #1, CGC graded 4.5 with a value code of $20,000 to $35,000. Given that the current high bid rests at $10,998.90 after 15 bids, there is still plenty of room for this book to grow. An identically-graded copy of this book sold $24,000 on Heritage just over two months ago. 4.5s have been trending positively by 8.4 % over the last year.

Giant-Size X-Men #1

The Marvel royalty continues with a key Bronze Age comic. This first appearance of the New X-Men in Giant-Sized X-Men #1 is CGC graded 8.0 VF condition with white pages. This book was written by Len Wein and illustrated by Dave Cockrum.

This was a special issue of the X-Men comic book series.   Though not a regular issue, it contained the first new X-Men story in five years, titled Second Genesis. The issue serves as a link between the original X-Men and a new team.

The two most recent sales of this book, both within the last two months, have sold for $6,000 each (eBay, Heritage).

This grade has trended downward in value by about 10% over the last year. This could be an opportune time to add this classic to your collection. The current high bid is $3,125.10 after eleven bids.

X-Men #101

"Hear me, X-Men! No longer am I the woman you knew! I am fire! And life incarnate! Now and forever -- I am PHOENIX!"

There is no higher-graded X-Men #101 than this, a CGC graded 9.8 X-Men #101 in Near Mint/Mint condition with white pages. There are 169 9.8s in the CGC census.

This first appearance and origin of Phoenix also features Black Tom Cassidy and Juggernaut appearances. It also marks the price change of the comics from 25 to 30 cents.

This book has been on an upward trend lately, with its last three sales hitting $6,600 (8/16/21, Heritage), $6,101 (eBay, 5/23/21), and $5,449 (eBay, 4/20/21). In this auction, its high bid at the time of this writing is $2,7500 after 14 bids.

X-Men #94

Also worth watching is an X-Men #94, CGC graded 9.2 NM-. Uncanny X-Men #94 is the beginning of writer Chris Claremont's 16-year run on the title. Under his guidance, Uncanny X-Men would become the industry's top title, and, along with Spider-Man, one of Marvel Comics' most popular comics for the next two decades.

In X-Men #94, the magazine was revived after its multi-issue break. Once it returned, all of the original X-Men quit the team except for Cyclops. All were replaced by the "All-New, All-Different" X-Men, including Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Colossus. A former X-Men enemy, Banshee, also joins the team as an ally.

This book also gives us the second appearance of Colossus, second appearance of Nightcrawler, second appearance of Storm, second appearance of Thunderbird, and third appearance of Wolverine.

There are 443 copies of this book in this grade listed in the CGC census. It currently has a high bid of $2,654.30 after 17 bids. This book has a value code of  $2,000 to $5,000.

Hulk #181 CGC 2.5

I doubt anyone reading this needs an explanation as to why this entry is iconic in the world of comics. You've got a classic cover that has been emulated more than once, the first (full) appearance of arguably the most popular Marvel character, and you have Wolverine movie rumors that help keep this book in high demand.

Offered here is a Hulk #181, CGC graded 2.5 in Good+ condition with cream to off-white pages. Currently, the bid for this book rests at $1,650.00 after only ten bids. The last three sales of this book in this grade went for $2,850 (eBay), $3,149 (eBay), and $2,950 (eBay), respectively. With a low grade of such a grail book, this might be a reasonably affordable time to add this to your collection. What do you think the final sale price will be?

Tomb of Dracula #10 CGC 8.0

This key Bronze Age comic has been trending positively in every grade over the last year as speculation continues around the possibilities from a new Blade movie, which has been announced to start filming in July 2022. As Marvel continues to dip into the supernatural side of comics, the interest in Blade the Vampire Slayer's first appearance doesn't seem to be going away any time soon. In this auction, we're offered Tomb of Dracula #10 in a CGC graded 8.0 Very Fine condition with white pages.

The current FMV of this book in this grade is $2,600, with this copy sitting on a value code of $2,000 to $5,000. It currently has a high bid of $1,210.00. This is a great time to get in relatively early on a character that is still awaiting his latest chance on the MCU big screen.

Amazing Spider-Man #129 CGC 5.0

We're continuing down our list of firsts with the First Appearance of Punisher. This copy  of Amazing Spider-Man #129 has a CGC grade of 5.0 and is listed in Very Good/Fine condition with off-white to white pages.

This is another major comic book Bronze Age key issue and a must-have for any Spider-Man collector. Though most grades of this book have trended negatively over the last year, the 5.0 has seen a positive trend of 12.5%.

The current high bid is resting right in the middle of this book's $1,000 to $2,000 value code at $1,320.00. This is slightly below the two most recent sales in this grade.

Foom #10

Foom, or "Friends of Ol' Marvel," was Marvel Comics' self-produced fan magazine of the mid-1970s, following the canceled Marvelmania and preceding Marvel Age. This copy is a CGC graded 7.5 VF-.  Grader's notes list a "subsription label attached to back cover"

Out of all the editions of this magazine, FOOM! #10 has probably the best argument for being valuable.  The reason for this is simple: This issue has a cover appearance of the New X-Men, including  Wolverine, and a separate article in the issue before these characters would appear in Giant-Size X-Men #1.  This book includes not only aNew X-Men cover, but also an article and centerfold featuring the heroes.

First appearances outside comics are the subject of much debate among collectors, and this one is no different. Still, it's an excellent piece to add to the collection of any X-Men fan.

There are a total of 93 Blue Labels in the CGC census, with only 6 landing at 7.5 and 54 books higher than that.  At the moment, the current high bid in this auction is $300.
