On May 18th, Heritage offers hopeful buyers a chance to win some beautiful Golden Age war books. As the Golden Age of comics was birthed during World War II, a majority of the comics produced at that time were war comics. Almost every publisher had their star-spangled heroes battling the Axis powers -- even slice-of-life and teen humor comics got in on the action. War comics are a personal favorite of mine to collect as the covers are sometimes works of art. This showcase auction has some genuinely amazing examples, and these are my top pics from this auction.

Air Ace V1 #9 CBCS 6.5

This Jack Binder cover is one of the more eye-catching covers I've seen of the era. The red background draws you into the action, as a man riding a tiger attacks two men in mid-air. The color choices and lines are impeccable -- this cover absolutely screams WWII. Per Heritage, this issue has adapted the John Wayne movie, The Flying Tigers, inside. While not all Golden Age war comics are created equal, any collector should not overlook this. You don't see covers like this very often.

This CBCS blue label 6.5 features Off-White to White pages. A similarly graded example was last sold in May of 2017 for $550. This book does not come up for sale very often, so be prepared to potentially spend over $800 for this book. This book will likely increase in value as not many have been graded by any third-party company, and is harder to find.

Wings Comics #85 CGC Universal 8.5

Wings Comics is a personal Golden Age War comic favorite of mine. Between 1940 and 1954 the aviation-themed comic entertained and delighted readers of all ages. The covers were dynamic and beautiful, with many of the covers featuring aerial action. Wings Comics can be very collectible.

A number of Wings Comics feature Good Girl Art, such as issues 87, 93, and 85. In the mid to late 90's A List Publishing reprinted the comics, with updated cover art. While the reprints are great as reader copies, nothing beats the original Fiction House copies.

This CGC blue label 8.5 featured Off-White to White pages and a bright, beautiful, and dynamic cover. CGC has only graded 27 of these, with all of them receiving the Universal label. Only seven grades higher than this one, and seldom do they come up for sale.

In February of 2022, a similar 8.5 example sold for $400. I believe $400-$600 is a fair price for this book. If you're a Golden Age collector this is a great opportunity to grab this book.

Rangers Comics #26

Iconic, iconic, iconic. When you think of Good Girl and War comics, this Joe Doolin cover art likely comes to mind. This daring woman in a green dress has been reprinted time and time again, making this comic a collector's item. This copy isn't graded, which appeals to a number of people who prefer raw or ungraded books.

Heritage notes that this comic has a small piece missing on the front cover, as well as three interior pages. The book was also mis-cut in publishing, so if you like factory defect books, this is a great book.  Heritage gives this book a Very Good+ / 4.0 overall grade.

The last time a graded example in a similar grade was sold was in March 2019 on eBay. The book sold for $567 -- by comparison, the highest graded example, a CGC blue label 9.6 -- has a fair market value of $16,500. If you're looking for a solid copy of this book, don't sleep on this example!
