Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 12/10/08

Here are this week’s comics ranked prior to reading them:

4. Transformers Maximum Dinobots #1
3. Lone Ranger #16
2. Action Comics #872
1. Green Lantern Corps #31

I passed on Detective, but I’m rethinking that move and may pick it up next week.

Here are the rankings after the first read through with a mini-review:

4. Lone Ranger #16

Matthews, Cariello & Cassaday

This issue is a look into the mind of Cavendish. Cavendish is the real, one, true enemy of the Ranger. It’s a good story about how his father abused him and made him into the monster his father was. Along the way he kills a couple of people in the present, while trying to make confession in a church. There is a big problem with this story: his name isn’t spoken anywhere in the story. This story would scare off any new reader. Add in that the Ranger appears on one page and you have a story that is really for those that are following each issue of the series. While this story needed to be told and is told very well I cant help but feel like it leaves some people in the dark.

3. Transformers: Maximum Dinobots #1

Furman & Roche

This issue revisits the Earth plot threads left dangling from the Revelations and Devastation arcs. It’s a great start to pick up the stories left over as well as the Grimlock one shot. Grimlock is being tracked by a few groups. Some good, some not so good, but others are also being tracked. Hot Rod is still searching for Sunstreaker and he seems to be on the hunted side as well. Of course there are some Decepticons sniffing around to make things really interesting. This comic gets back to a small cast with a very focused story. This is very reminiscent of the Infiltration arc. One question though: what happened to Ironhide?

2. Action Comics #872

Johns & Woods

Another solid issue. I liked the previous issue a little more than this one, but this one makes a few interesting turns in the plot. Superman is trying to get the Kryptonians to turn over those who murdered the humans. Luthor is unleashing a real solid plan to infiltrate the Super Powered folks. But other players enter the fray. The cast is growing and this arc could lose focus quickly, but the story stays centered on the plot and those developments. The comic is extremely fast moving and it jumps from scene to scene with little transition between panels. It’s a little tough to see the whole thing play out if you read it too fast. I liked the story and its looking like it will have a real bang up ending.

1. Green Lantern Corps #31

Tomasi, Gleason & Buchman

Kryb is a freaky creature that not only kills Green Lanterns to steal their babies, but is also capable of pulling in grownups and making them slaves. Things look really bleak for the Corps at the end of this issue as the baby stealer is pretty much in control of everyone except the mother about to give birth. This issue packs in a lot of amazing visuals in the action filled panels. This is a fun read and usually is month after month.
