Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 06/04/08

Here are this week’s comics ranked prior to reading them, based upon past performance and advance information released on each issue:

4. Transformers Reign of Starscream #2

3. Kick-Ass #3

2. Cable #4

1. Secret Invasion #3

Here are the rankings after the first read through with a mini-review:

4. Secret Invasion #3 (Bendis, Yu, Morales & Martin)

I liked this issue, but just not as much as the previous two. What I liked about was that a major Marvel Hero is revealed to be a Skrull, but he isn’t admitting to it, he is being told he is one by another Skrull. I like the paranoia aspect here a lot. However, this comic was virtually cover to cover “teams”. As a reader of only a few Marvel titles a month I was lost. I’m sure there was a cliffhanger with one of these teams at the end but it went over my head. I found this to be a downer.

3. Transformers Reign of Starscream #2 (Mowry, Ryall, Milne & Perez)

A solid issue. Finally, there is some meat in terms of plot. Starscream tries to recover Frenzy, he is met with heavy resistance. He discovers that the humans have their own transformer. We find out there are more Decepitcons on Mars…..and other Autobots nearby. This issue moved fast with plenty of action.

2. Cable #4 (Swierczynski & Olivetti)

I was highly entertained with this issue. Probably because we get a new player in the form of Cannonball. This story continues to provide more questions than answers, but this particular issue has enough action and great dialogue between Cannonball and Cable that those questions can be left unanswered. This comic was very good.

1. Kick-Ass #3 (Millar & Romita Jr)

This issue is a no holds barred kind of issue. Violence, graphic blood, cursing, nudity and humor. Everything you could look for in an offbeat comic book is here. Dave (Kick-Ass) figures out his name. He finds a place in his school due to his confidence as a super hero. He gets close to the girl he has a crush on. And, of course, he gets himself into a ton of trouble in the end of the issue that has a real shocker of an ending. What an amazingly great comic read this was.
