Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 02/04/09

Here are this week’s comics ranked prior to reading them:

2. Cable #11
1. X-Men: Magneto Testament #5 of 5

A really short week allows me time to put together my NY comic con game plan.

Here are the rankings after the first read through with a mini-review:

2. Cable #11

Swierczynski, McKelvie, Guru eFX & Olivetti

This issue was a bit of a letdown for a couple of reasons. For one, the artist shift in the middle of issue was way to jarring. Their styles are vastly different. Not to mention the fact that the Messiah child is seven years old and act seven years old but looks like just a shorter adult. I was really put off with the art or maybe just the art directions in this issue. The content is fairly tame. Cable and the kid are trying to find a spot in the future that is habitable. For the most part the further they jump the worse it gets. This may be the most disappointing issue in this series.

1. X-Men: Magneto Testament #5 of 5

Pak, Di Giandomenico & Hollingsworth

The holocaust comes to a close in this issue as this comic chronicles the Auschwitz Sonderkommando revolt. Obviously, Magneto gets away in the fray but what was interesting was that his mutant powers never manifest here. It’s all Max, no Magneto. He’s just a young adult trying to escape from certain death. The only thing that slightly let me down was that he wasn’t really part of the planning as he and his crew are only in on the secondary group to escape. They basically followed the other crew’s lead. That, and the issue kind of ended abruptly. There wasn’t much in the way of a wrap up. This was a terrific series and the finale mentions the extras that will be included in the collected edition. It’s a good study of the holocaust from the comic perspective.
