Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Weekly Rankings For 01/28/09

Here are this week’s comics ranked prior to reading them:

2. Star Wars Legacy #32
1. Captain America #46

A really short week allows me time to catch up on some trades, like Elephantmen.

Here are the rankings after the first read through with a mini-review:

2. Star Wars Legacy #32
Ostrander, Francia & Anderson

A breather arc that is about the Calamari genocide. This issue parallels the Holocaust of the Jews in WWII to some extent. As the Sith don’t want to just kill the whole race off immediately. They have plans to starve them out and torture them through day to day life before killing them. It’s an interesting concept here because the Calamari race are fish and are in their own natural habitat whereas underwater the Sith are in a foreign environment. However, the Sith have their own brand of underwater weapon unveiled here. It’s a good issue that makes use of some periphery characters. The only drawback is that it comes on the heels of the previous arc which was a major shift in the status quo which this issue doesn’t address. It’s a good issue that will probably heat up a lot from here.

1. Captain America #46
Brubaker, Epting & D’Armata

Bucky heads to China in search of the good doctor who stole the corpse of his friend, the Human Torch, but not before bringing along an old friend in the form of Namor. I’m not entirely sure why he brought Namor and not Black Widow, other than that Namor knew the Human Torch, but whatever. However, the issue is really about Bucky trying to cope with his past as Winter Soldier and embrace that he was Winter Soldier whether the actions were his own or not. Bucky seems to be teetering on the brink of letting his past crush what he’s become. The arc has some larger questions at work besides the bad guys trying to use some of Bucky’s dead friends for evil purposes. This was a great issue and it really launches this series back to the top after a slower arc with Batroc. This is a great issue to check out with the subsequent issues looking to be great.
