Walking Dead #93Walking Dead #93

The latest issue of the Walking Dead launches into the arc entitled, "A Larger World". The long time reader will find the comic to be fairly familiar covering ground that has mostly been mapped out time and time again. However, the issue does provide a good jump-on point and it also shows an interesting level of character growth from Rick, which even the most loyal reader can appreciate. Overall, this issue is good but doesn't approach greatness, such is the case with many first issues of an arc.

The issue begins with Rick striking a deal with Jesus. Rick is ready to open up the trade route between communities. This one page dialogue manages to recap much of what has gone on in the last couple of issues with regard to Jesus entering the picture. Except Rick isn't taking chances and shows Jesus some old-school hospitality – Governor style.

After Rick gets into battle mode, he dispatches sharp shooters, wall watchers and then uses himself as bait to lure out the invaders. Surely Jesus has an army waiting to attack their community? Well, what Rick finds is a "Come to Jesus Moment" while he is out scouting with Michonne and Abraham (how fitting). Rick realizes that he's the danger and that the world is out there for him – perhaps to be taken. This is all lovely character progression within this single issue and the series overall.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsAdlard nails this book in a couple of scenes. Sure, the zombie panels are detailed and vibrant but the true treasure is in the splash page at the back. When Rick looks out at the horizon the moment is clear, more so in pictures then words, that Rick is looking to expand and not lock himself away. Adlard also gives some tremendous visual tension as Rick tries to rally his friends to combat a potential attack. This includes how he depicts the smugness of Jesus as he and Rick talk things over. The art in this issue is an excellent companion to the story.

Walking Dead feels like it keeps telling the same story. There is some level of safety followed by a threat and then a bunch of characters die. However, this issue really digs deep into Rick's mindset and it shows a real turning point for the character. The book is a good start to what promises to be a great arc.
