This comic book is dark, mystic and a fantasy unlike anything I think I have ever seen before. I can't say this issue blew me away to the point that I am anxiously awaiting the next issue but I was certainly entertained with what I read. This comic is probably going to find a niche and loyal audience but I am not sure this will appeal to everyone. It's definitely something out of the ordinary.

The book begins with the King and Queen as the reader is given an overview of the characters and their interactions. The book moves quickly to their son and his friend (a young girl) as they find themselves some mischief.

The book shifts violently in a direction I didn't see coming. The comic book doesn't have the fairy tale elements that were lining up in these opening pages and I'm not sure what to make of it. The book then launches into the darker elements and leaves off in a confusing place.

It's clear there is a long-term plan for this comic book because the creators included a map within the first ten pages of the entire kingdom that is more detailed than something you find in the Lord of the Rings. However, this book seems to be so brief with the character focus that found it to be a little jarring. Characters roll in and out and I was unable to really get a foothold on which ones matter and which ones are disposable.

The underlying threat is presented nicely as the reader catches glimpses early on as to where this is headed. Couple that with some strong dialogue among the characters and the book has a great flow to it.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsThe comic book certainly has elements that are reminiscent of the film, The Dark Crystal. It's not to say this follows the script of the film but it definitely seems to model itself slightly from it, especially in the creepiness. In that regard the artwork sparkles. The book uses a vast array of colors to really illuminate the eyes. The story is obviously a dark one but the images seem to have a broader range that I found to be more fit for the characters. Visually this book is definitely something to behold.

Umbral is a book that is full of surprises. The book appears to have a much larger plot that has yet to unfold but this is a pretty good introduction to the characters and the first initial problem. I liked the book and I think this is something to pick up and give it a try. I am interested to see where all of this is heading.
