The Wake #6The Wake #6 of 10
Vertigo Comics (DC Comics)
Snyder & Murphy

The Wake returns with another compelling and visually delightful issue. The book turns its attention to the future when the sea monsters have helped create an altered Earth. The comic might appear to be just another dystopian future book, but the presentation is extremely engaging and, amazingly, extremely accessible to a new reader. I definitely recommend checking this out, even if you haven't picked up the previous five issues.

The comic book opens with the lead character entrapping some of the monsters along with her dolphin companion. These opening scenes help to establish what life is like in the future as well as giving us a glimpse into the lead character's tough, but intelligent character definition.

After these introductory scenes we then visit one of the human "towns" as we get an idea of how the people live with this new version of Earth, specifically America. The scenes paint a bleak, but serviceable future where life seems to function, but with a lot of difficult work.

Finally, the comic opens up the plot that will lead us to some sort of resolution to this story over the next four issues. The scenes don't provide a ton of bright spots, but they do provide some level of hope. With multiple plot threads opening to work against the saving of humanity Snyder is definitely creating a situation where the characters will have an impossible task getting out of their plight.

The comic does a lot in a short amount of space. The reader gets an idea of the landscape, the problems and the plot. You can't ask for a more comprehensive opening issue to a chapter.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsThe artwork is stunning. Murphy puts his mark on every single page. Murphy lets his imagination run wild in this issue when it comes to the futuristic look and he also manages to provide some frightening visuals when dealing with the sea monsters. The only downer is the text for the sectional heading is unreadable in terms of font style and color. Overall, this was a visually amazing book.

The Wake is off to a great second act. The comic is a horror book that is setting up the complex plot. There is a lot to like in here and a lot of moving parts, but even if you just look at the visuals you will get your money's worth in entertainment. This is a must-have book.
