Silk #1Silk #1
Marvel Comics
Thompson, Lee & Herring

Silk is a character that has seen plenty of action in Amazing Spider-Man and she now gets her own title. Though a relatively new character she already has a strong base in terms of back-story and personality and this helps to get this first issue off quickly allowing the story to unfold without having to fill the readers in on the origin for twenty pages. The comic has a nice pace to it and is a fun read. Though it doesn't really break any boundaries it is worth checking out.

Silk has the distinction of getting bit by the exact same spider that Peter Parker was bit by all those years ago. However, she spent a decade locked in a basement and was recently freed by Parker. She is now a Spider friend to Parker. Much like the early days of Spider-Man, Silk is struggling to find her place in the world with her personal life and super-hero life. While I like the similarities to Parker, it does have that been-there-done-that feel to it all.

Also like a Spider-Man comic, this comic spins a lot of plates. There is a fight scene, a rematch, some of her work life under JJJ, some flashbacks to her family life and a little bit of her love life. It is certainly a full read when you get down to it. While she's a charming character, the book just feels too much like another Ultimate version of Spider-Man.

The artwork is very much like Ramos over in Spider-Man. The book is clean and bright. The comic book has a lot of action and has liveliness to it that makes the pages pop with vibrancy. Silk has that deer in headlights look about her at times but she also has a strong intensity that is on display at other times. The visuals help the book fit in with the greater Spidey universe.

Silk is a good read. Those that are picking up the Spidey books will pick this up and feel right at home. Newer readers will probably find that the comic struggles to find something original to say about a character that is so similar to Peter Parker. Some readers might find the lead character charming as well as appealing because she is something new, which definitely provides an open book that you won't get with many of the other characters. Silk is an entertaining read and there is something to be said for that. I recommend giving this comic a look.
