Saga closes out the third volume with another powerful issue. With the events coming to a head at the end of the previous issue, this issue picks up those threads and ups them. What we end up with is another strong issue in what is a very strong series. Not only do you get a comic that is rich in character depth and interactions, but you also get a deep plot and amazing art. I highly recommend this issue and this series.
The plot threads are complex and are crashing into each other in this issue. The Will is near death and his would-be-girlfriend, Gwen, attacks her ex-finance, Marko, his wife, Alana, his daughter and his mother in hopes of getting some help for her companion. This is further compounded by Prince Robot IV, the main person behind the hunt for Alana and Marko, showing up on the scene. It’s a great issue that brings in a lot of surprises and character turns.
One of the aspects of the issue that works well is that nothing is certain. Characters get hurt, characters die. It seems like in that regard anything can happen. The other part of the book that makes it a great read is that the book launches ahead in the timeline at the end and many of the characters are left with unresolved plots. There is a hint of safety for some while others are left in complete limbo. This issue definitely shakes things up.
Staples is perfect for this comic book. She has a soft style and a simple presentation to the characters and situations. However, she provides such a punch when it comes to dealing with dramatic facial expressions. The character’s emotions are conveyed to perfection as a result of the artwork and the comic book simply wouldn’t be the same without her style on art duties. Saga is a gorgeous comic book.
Saga moves into the next phase of the story at the conclusion of this issue and it definitely looks promising. This issue contains a lot of closure but not on everything. There are plenty of plot threads that are left very open-ended and that will help to keep the reader on the edge of their seats waiting for this book to return in May. Saga is simply one of the very best books on the stands and this is just another issue in the long line of great ones. This is a book that should be on your pull list.
