Death Of Wolverine The Weapon X Program #1The Death of Wolverine: Weapon X Program #1
Marvel Comics
Soule, Larroca & D'Armata

The latest Wolverine title to spin out of the Death of Wolverine story focuses on the events while he was dying, set at the sight where he was dying. This is a good start to this series and does something at the end to keep the readers interested. This is a good idea, with a great hook at the end with some decent execution. This may be a series to watch.

The comic opens with a man named Sharp trying to make sense of the underground facility falling apart around him. It's clear he's been a part of some type of experimentation, presumably part of the Weapon X project. What we don't know for sure is if these characters are some of the human specimens that were to be the perfect weapon. Wolverine without the free-will. We don't see the character's face, even as he moves through the facility and finds others that seem to have similar backgrounds.

The book has a decent cast of characters that get introduced. All of the characters seem to have a level head, there are no Deadpools to be found in the Weapon X program. The odd part of this book is the action. While the action helps to keep the book moving and to help position the characters for the surprise ending, but the plot doesn't really add up. The building is falling apart and men are chasing down escaped patients? Is this to round them up to save an asset? If so, then how do they switch to kill so quickly? Why not let the building kill them? The comic struggles with these types of details but makes for good action.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsThe artwork is good but definitely not great. The problems with flow are too many in number. There is one sequence where the troops come down a tunnel to confront the patients. At least two are right next to each other. One is then killed by a patient and the next panel seems to have all the troops a good twenty feet behind the troop that was killed. Issues such as this occur periodically in the book and don't do anything other than take the reader out of the story. The pencil work is very detailed and has some fantastic images, especially the final page. The creations behind the new characters are also depicted very well. I liked the artwork a lot but the flow of the pictures with the story could have used a closer eye before sending it to press.

This comic runs side by side with the Death of Wolverine story. I like the idea of a parallel track, such as this, and the plot threads could have some interesting results down the line. The characters are also nice additions to this event fallout. The comic could have used some work making this book a tighter read, but overall this is a good start. I recommend checking this out.
