A standalone issue dedicated to the ninja rooster, Poyo, is exactly the kind of comic book that should be in everyone’s read list. Chew is a great book, but this comic really has very little to do with the main characters or storyline in Chew. This issue is about Poyo and how awesome he is. It’s a great book and I urge anyone who is a fan of something different to pick this book up.

When last we saw Poyo he had been shot to pieces. There is no better way to reintroduce him than by having Hell reject him. These opening scenes establish immediately what kind of story this comic is: simply a lot of fun.

Once back in the land of the living, Poyo is then enlisted to deal with an overseas threat. It turns out there is a mad scientist that has the ability to make farm animals rain from the sky. I’m not kidding. This guy can actually make the skies open up and send down flocks of sheep in a bloody rampage.

geekgoggle Geek Goggle Reviews: Chew Secret Agent Poyo #1The comic book is a terrific one-shot because Poyo can’t even talk and yet, he is the centerpiece of the story. Layman and Guillory stretch their creative legs here by inventing a completely different threat from what we are used to in this series. This isn’t a story about Tony Chu and food or some alien writing in the sky. This story is a mad scientist just being evil and unleashing a demon bird after him. This comic book is well paced, funny, filled with action and a concise read.

Guillory is the perfect fit for Chew and the case isn’t any different for Poyo. All of the lively panels and energetic characters that he brings to the land of Chew are on full display in this book. Guillory does “odd” like few artists and what’s more strange than a rooster carving up the hounds of Hell?

If you haven’t read an issue of Chew this your chance. If you have, then you already know this comic book is going to be great. The only thing that is missing are the cat pictures that usually adorn the letters column.
