Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Chew #55
Image Comics
Layman & Guillory

The finale to the "Last Suppers" arc in Chew provides a surprising twist in the second to last arc in the series. This is a very strong comic. The cliffhanger from the previous issues spills into this issue and there are other surprises that move this comic into a very different direction as it gears up for what looks to an unpredictable final arc. The artwork is stellar as always. Overall, this is a very strong read and is definitely a comic to seek out.

In an effort not to spoil any of the details in the comic book I will try to dance around the plot. This comic deals a lot with Savoy and his story. There are a number of pages where he is providing a monologue to what appears to be no one in particular. It's sort of a fireside chat that might even be directed at the reader. We get a lot of his origin and information about the events of the previous issue. What we don't get is why he is so keen on working with Chu. If this information is so vital where the pair need to team-up then wouldn't it be better for him to simply send Tony a note with everything Tony needs?

As the comic progresses we find that all is not as it seems. Tony eventually finds his way to Savoy for a final confrontation. It's not entirely clear what Tony intends to do but he is met with quite a surprise that will have deep ramifications for the players involved in the final arc.

There isn't a way to further expand on how good this comic is. If you are following the book then you know that each issue is a good read, but some of them rise above the others. This issue is one of those very memorable ones. I suppose when the characters are this well-defined you are bound to get connected to them. Then when something big happens it tends to come across as a punch in the gut. This is one of those issues.

Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle ReviewsThe artwork is fantastic. While the material is very serious in nature, there are lighter moments as well. Guillory treats each scene with its own tone, but doesn't skimp on the details or the emotion. As a result, this comic is another powerful visual read.

"Chew" wraps up its penultimate arc, "Last Suppers" with a surprising and emotional read. The fallout is going to have a big impact on how the final arc plays out. This is one of those powerful issues that only "Chew" seems capable of pulling off regularly. The comic is made more dramatic with the exceptional artwork as Guillory continues to churn out issue after issue of some of the best artwork in the business. This is a great issue in a great series. It will be a sad day when this comic comes to a close.
