A new upcoming Star Wars comic book series, War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha, will be released on May 5, 2021.  The series is a prelude to the mini-series: War of the Bounty Hunters.

Back in 2019, writer Charles Soule pitched the concept story for Marvel's Star Wars comic series.  The pitched idea centered around answering one question involving Hans Solo and Boba Fett: What happened between the events of Empire and Jedi before Boba Fett took Solo to Jabba's palace?

Boba Fett is in possession of Hans Solo frozen in carbonite at the end of Empire but then is not in possession of Solo by the beginning of War of the Bounty Hunters.  Obviously, something happened from Cloud City to Tatooine!  The plotline of the series will unpack the question: How did Boba Fett lose Solo and how will he get him back?  The series will feature Jabba the Hutt, Darth Vader, and Black Sun (a criminal syndicate).  This sets up Boba Fett alone vs. all these other people.

The series will be canon although some of these "what happened" questions were already answered in Legends.

Should War of the Bounty Hunters be a definite yes for your future pulls and spec?  Let's chase that question.

War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1

What does this series have going for it?

It's Star Wars.  Boba Fett.  Bounty hunters.  Let the mayhem begin!

Also, there will be crossover material in the ongoing comic book series Star Wars: Bounty Hunters, Star Wars: Darth Vader, Star Wars Doctor Aphra, and Star Wars.  The mini-series will be five issues long and conclude in October 2021.

With the Star Wars universe exploring new territory and characters (High Republic, etc), this series goes the other direction and is aimed at the old-school, tried and true, so "let's utilize favs of Star Wars fans": Boba Fett, Jabba, Darth Vader, and others.  So, there will be immediate fan interest in this series.

Also, though some of this story has been told, (Legends), this will be canon.  And canon always beats non-canon.  (For example, the Solo offspring twins Jacen and Jaina Solo first appearances found in Star Wars: Dark Empire II #5, which some people grabbed multiple copies for an upswing in value but then the twins didn't make canon and they are now holding non-canon first appearances copies that haven't moved up in value--but no bitterness here, folks!)

And don't forget Disney+.  The upcoming Disney+ show The Book of Boba Fett is scheduled to release in December 2021, which is a spin-off of The Mandalorian and will utilize Boba Fett from that series.

What's the downside of chasing this series?

Lots of Boba Fett already out there.  Boba Fett could be like Venom, Venomized, Venomistic, Venomanic (OK, I'm getting carried away, I know).  War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha is following the release of the recent series Bounty Hunters and will lead into the War of the Bounty Hunters series.  Again, there is lots of saturation of all kinds of bounty hunters.

The Bottom Line

I think the soon-to-be-released Disney+ show and the Mandalorian spin-off factor tip the scale for this series to be a strong buy.

Take a hard look at the variants of issue #1.  I think this series will follow the same pattern for value as Bounty Hunters.  The 1 for 50 Retailer Incentive Variant Cover of Bounty Hunters by Dave Johnson went big (currently $525 for a CGC 9.8).  The Andrews cover was another cover that did very well.  The takeaway?  See what you can snag of the great covers from Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1.

Check out the Black Armor 1:50 Incentive variant as one to see if you can get.  There is already lots of buzz about it.
