Life has a way of forming unions we never dreamed possible. Superman teamed up with Muhammad Ali. Japanese monster Godzilla appeared on screen with American creation King Kong. Sadly the story I will tell is how a San Diego Comic-Con worker could have prevented the greatest possible fantasy union for the fans. This is part 2 of an interview with the granddaughter of Frank Frazetta. If you missed part one check it out.

Game of Thrones... George R. R. Martin and  Frank Frazetta?

Think of San Diego Comic-Con and all you hear are stories of future releases by industry leaders. If you are a fan of George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones, and Frank Frazetta this story will really make you wonder what might have been. When I asked about celebrities that enjoyed Frank Frazetta’s work, Sara mentioned the names of Hollywood royalty like Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, Robert Rodriguez, Jon Favreau, and numerous others. His effect on artists and thespians was limitless and the more I heard of his encounters with these individuals the more  I realized the true power of the man and his art.

Then Sara mentioned a unique incident at the end of the interview. It really piqued my interest. I had never heard the story before that involved Frank Frazetta's art. So when I started to hear the story all I could think was this tale had all the makings of a Hollywood movie happy ending, but sadly it ended more like a fan boy’s Greek tragedy.

A San Diego Comic-Con Line Tragedy!

Sara explained how her mother Holly Frazetta was at the San Diego Comic-Con when literary genius George R. R. Martin was in attendance. Sara described how her mother was a big fan of Martin’s Game of Thrones series and decided to meet the author. She even told her daughter that maybe she could talk with George R. R. Martin about one day working together with them. So let’s digest what is happening at this event.

The daughter and owner of the copyrights to the works of the greatest fantasy book cover artist of all time is waiting in line to meet the eras most successful fantasy writer whose books were turned into a mega-hit on HBO. In addition, Martin actually mentioned Frazetta in one of his blog posts, so he knows the legacy of Frank Frazetta. Am I the only one thinking something great could happen here?  Imagine Martin licensing a Frazetta image and using the character created by Frank Frazetta for one of his story characters and the Frazetta work appearing as the book cover.   How the stars must have aligned to create this prospect for all of us fans.

What might have been...

Even the great Mr. Martin could not produce on paper how the possible union of two great fantasy icons was prevented by the cruelest of ironies. Holly Frazetta never used her family’s name to get to the front. Instead, she waited patiently for her turn in line. Sadly the Frank Frazetta modesty that was passed on to his daughter proved to be the Achilles heel of our heroine. Holly Frazetta was turned away with the rest of the line because of time constraints! As fans we can only be left with might have been, or could we do more. I reached out to  George R.R. Martin's people for this story but never received an official comment.

Frank Frazetta Would be Proud

I want to thank Sara Frazetta from FRAZETTAGIRLS.COM for the time she shared telling her stories about her grandfather and the new legacy she is ushering in for his fans. If you want to learn more about her business please check out her site. And look for her in the future at comic cons. Also, if you are interested in seeing some great artwork, book a tour at the Frazetta Museum in Boca Grande, Florida to review the master’s work.

Finally, if you are reading this George R.R. Martin, please give Sara Frazetta a call and see what you can do to give fans a memorable team-up of industry icons. My fingers are crossed.
