Brandon Borzelli's Geek Goggle Reviews

Flash #240
DC Comics
Peyer & Williams II

I sense this series coming out of the woods. At long last, a Flash story I can get into. This issue isn’t perfect, but it’s getting there. Flash has a couple of villains to deal with in this issue. Thankfully for him, two of the villains battle each other. However, in the fray, his kids get kidnapped. Add it all up and it makes for an interesting comic.

The issue begins with the new bad guy, Spin, teleporting in Gorilla Grodd. Grodd is pissed. Grodd also entered with a smaller monkey. I’m not sure what his role is, but it could be interesting with the Flash kids. Grodd beats down Spin.

Meanwhile, Flash and his kids are investigating the news station. There, he determines something is in the air making people re-create the news in real life. It’s an odd situation, but it also adds some humor.

While this is going on some guys who seem to be part of the Dark Side Club are driving around looking for some trouble. Eventually they get it by kidnapping the Flash kids. I don’t know who the Dark Side Club is, but why do I get the feeling it has something to do with a multiverse or an infinite final identity crisis? I hate that.

The issue wraps up with Flash going toe to toe with Grodd and something happening to one of the kids.

The issue is really good. It isn’t great beyond belief, but it is very good.

The artwork really shines in this issue. The action scenes take center stage and steal this issue from a very good story. The backgrounds have a blurry look to them, but they are still very detailed. This is the type of scenery you would expect to see if you were the Flash or if you were Grodd taking over an opponent’s mind. Add in the depictions of Grodd, his little monkey and Spin being outstanding and you have an A+ effort in the art department.

I guess this series is finally starting to refocus on the villains of the series. For me, this series has always been at its peak when multiple villains are involved at one time. Sure the kids are interesting, but they just can’t hold a story by coping with potentially dying soon or discovering their powers.

I want to like this series. This arc has the makings of something good. I would like to see more of this type of issue down the road. I think the artwork is already there in terms of telling a great story. Add in that this issue doesn’t even have the Flash featured and we are seeing the strength of the supporting cast, which can only help this title out. With this issue I feel like I can see the light at the end of a long dark tunnel.
