Spider-Man

Sony's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was one of the most surprising superhero films ever made. In addition to being an all-timer, the film somehow took home the Best Animated Feature Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2019, an awards show that has notoriously overlooked the superhero genre. With production underway for the highly anticipated sequel, we thought it would fun to look at five Spider-Men we want to see appear in Spider-Verse 2!

Before we get started, here are the following guidelines... Number 1: The character can't have made his debut in the original film (looking at you Spider-Man 2099/Spider-Man '67). Number 2: The character can't already be confirmed to appear in the sequel, and considering no one apart from Miles Morales, Peter B. Parker and Gwen Stacy are confirmed to appear, that will make this listicle rather fun.

5. Lego Spider-Man

Spider-Man

John Mulaney provided the comedy relief as Spider-Ham in the 2018 original, but this time around, a block-version of the wall-crawler would certainly be a sight to see. Of course, with the Lego film rights over at Universal, this could be a rather tricky deal to organize, but considering the merchandise potential (imagine the onslaught of Spider-Verse Lego sets) this could be a done deal.

4. The Live-Action Spider-Men

Spider-Man

Let's be real here: Who doesn't want to see animated versions of the live-action Spider-Men in Spider-Verse 2? According to Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the producers of Spider-Verse), something like this was actually a possibility, until Sony Executives deemed the idea to be a little "too soon." However, that is not a flat-out "no." If it means anything, by the time Spider-Verse 2 actually hits theatres, the original 2002 Spider-Man film with Tobey Maguire would be a little over 20 years old. Hopefully, Sony changes their tune by then as the mental image of Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland occupying the same frame is just too damn cool.

3. The Superior Spider-Man

Spider-Man

Dan Slott's run on The Amazing Spider-Man was full of ups and downs, but perhaps his most ingenious addition to the Spider-Man canon was turning the villainous Doctor Octopus into the wall-crawler himself. The Superior Spider-Man character is a lot of fun. Seeing a villain attempt to be a hero is always a riot, and with this added element to the sequel, we could explore some genuinely interesting themes about what it actually means to be Spider-Man, furthering the concept raised in the original movie; the notion that anybody can wear the mask...

2. Cosmic Spider-Man

Spider-Man

First appearing in Spectacular Spider-Man #158, Cosmic Spider-Man remains one of the most popular alternate versions of the wall-crawler. In case you have no idea who or what Cosmic Spider-Man is, just think of this: "What if Spider-Man became God?" Cosmic Spider-Man has enhanced senses, strength, speed, flight, a badass new costume, and telekinesis. If the Spider-Verse sequel looks to explore the deeper elements of the actual Spider-Verse, I could one hundred percent see Cosmic Spider-Man appearing in some degree.

1. Japanese Spider-Man

Spider-Man

Look, who else was going to be number 1? Japanese Spider-Man is one of the weirdest, most insane things to ever exist. First appearing in the 1978 television show of the same name, this interpretation of Spider-Man had everything... you wouldn't expect in an adaptation of Spider-Man. For example, this Spider-Man had a giant robot called Leopardon... Why? In all seriousness, the Japanese Spider-Man is one of the most beloved alternate versions of the character, and it is easy to see why. Since the 2018 original, the character has been heavily teased by all involved in the production, so I would bet money on Japanese Spider-Man appearing in the sequel.
