It’s a fantastic time to be a collector of things. Comics, Sports Cards, Cars, all of these items are fun to collect and can accrue massive value. Video games are the new kid on the block when it comes to the collectible sales market, but they have the potential to offer the greatest fun to value ratio. But what to invest in? That’s always the question, isn’t it? Let’s take a look at five great games to invest in for the Super Nintendo.
Super Mario World
One of the greatest platforms of all-time is also a strong, steady, seller. This is the quissessential garage sale game that you actually have a real chance of finding. A loose, out of the box copy of this game in good shape should fetch somewhere in the $10 to $20 dollar range. In the box, you could be looking at over $400.
If you are looking for a game that you can turn a profit on when selling it loose, look no further. Some games are volatile when selling loose cartridges, selling for less than $10 while others sell for over $20. Super Metroid is a game that will consistently sell at around $30 when loose and is common enough to snag in the wild. It’s also a blast to play, if you get the time, and appears to be trending upward.
Regarded as the greatest RPG of all-time by a wide swath of the video game world, it is no surprise this game would be valued. A loose cartridge in good condition should easily fetch over $100 and new in the box can sell for over $1,000.
This jet fighter game for the SNES has only increased in value as time has continued on. If you see this game, whether it be on eBay or at a thrift store, scoop it up. A loose game will sell in the $500 range, while in the box can net as much as $4,000.
Donkey Kong County Competition
The rare gem on the list, this specialty game will sell for a pretty price whether in the box or not. A loose copy of the game in good shape can easily grab over $2,000! Rarity is the key for this game or any investment game.
Rarity Adds Value
As we head down the list we are encountering games that are less common. Video game investment and sales are such a new thing, there are games that could be hot one day, and cold the next. A game like Super Mario World or Mega Man X could suffer from something like this. Loose game prices will also be particularly fickle, while games in the box steadily sell for a high price.
Fan Favorites Sell Well
There is a couple of series that came into their own on the SNES and tend to sell consistently well. Final Fantasy, Donkey Kong, Street Fighter, and of course Mario are all games that might be worth taking a chance on. With a large fan base to appeal to, it will usually work in your favor.
A Long Term Earner
Super Nintendo games are a great investment all around. The durable cartridges are fun to find at a garage sale or at a thrift store, and many games are worth money, even loose. It has a big enough library where you can find a game like Super Copa make over $150 on a cartridge out of the box! New in the box is the most desirable way to acquire games, just like any other collecting, but there are a couple of things that make games extra valuable. Check for things like “Not For Resale” or special editions of certain games.
The Super Nintendo has proven to be a solid investment choice for a beginning investor or nerds like me who want to relive their childhood.
