A conflict over Stillwater Cave forces two rangers to flee deep under the mountains. First, they must escape pursuers. Then, they must face the deadliest threat–the cave itself. Underground features Lieber's artwork at its finest: beautiful, human, yet vaguely threatening. As Wesley and Seth go deeper and deeper into the cave to elude some overeager locals who want to make the cave a tourist destination (and are willing to blow it up to achieve this), Lieber's pages become ever-more confining and claustrophobic.
Meanwhile, Parker's writing keeps the action going at a measured, deliberate pace, while bringing us deeper into each character's motivations, whether it's fear, greed, anger, or protectiveness. There are no cardboard villains or heroes here, just people trying to do what they think is right for themselves and their community.
