PIPPI MOVES INScheduled for Fall 2012, Drawn & Quarterly will be publishing the mid-century comic book reprint PIPPI MOVES IN under its children's imprint, ENFANT, it was announced today by D+Q Creative Director & Acquiring Editor Tom Devlin. Pippi Longstocking is Sweden's best-known children's export and has enthralled generations of children the world over with her fabulous exploits at Villa Villekulla, where she lives with her horse and monkey. Countless editions have been sold of the chapter books in over 60 languages. For the first time in English, Drawn & Quarterly will publish the first of a three-volume set of original Pippi Longstocking comics written by award-winning and world famous children's author Astrid Lindgren, drawn by original Pippi artist Ingrid Vang Nyman and translated by esteemed translator Tiina Nunnally. World English rights were negotiated with the Rabén & Sjögren Agency.

"When I was at the Helsinki Comics Festival this last September, I stumbled across a Finnish translation of the comic, and I was immediately awestruck and fascinated by two things," said Devlin. "The first was that there unpublished in English Pippi Longstocking comics by the iconic Astrid Lindgren and the second being the incredible talent of the original artist Ingrid Vang Nyman."

Originally published in the Swedish magazine Humpty Dumpty in 1957-1959, a decade after the original books, the comics re-imagine the classic chapter book stories and spotlight both Lindgren's brilliant writing and Vang Nyman's bold bright colors that seem presciently and eerily contemporary. The original illustrator for the chapter books, Vang Nyman was a very talented children's book illustrator and an avant-garde champion of the importance of children's literature who insisted that art in children's books needed to meet the same aesthetic standards as art in any other medium. Sadly Vang Nyman never achieved international success, and tragically committed suicide in 1959 due to mental health issues, while Lindgren went on to become one of the world's best loved writers with over 145 million books sold worldwide.

To join this unearthing of a midcentury classic comic strip, D+Q's ENFANT will be relaunching for Fall 2012 the MOOMIN THE COMPLETE COMIC STRIP by Tove Jansson in full color and in kid friendly flexicovers and will spotlight single stories. There are currently over 100,000 units of the MOOMIN hardcovers in print in English. World English rights for the relaunch were negotiated with Bulls Press.

Both series will be distributed by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in the US; by Raincoast Books in Canada and PGUK in the United Kingdom.
