The first issue of the second series of Doctor Strange #1 is a big draw for fans. It is after all the first appearance of the Agamotto Dimension and of The Mighty Agamotto himself. This had a great deal of talent applied to this particular comic book with Steve Englehart (script), Frank Brunner on Pencils and the irrepressible Dick Giordano on inks. The Brunner cover really is a piece of the 70s and holds up well after all these years. The creation of Doctor Strange is probably one of the greatest all-time characters by Marvel. In my book, he is right up there with Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America. Doctor Strange #1 has good returns but not great. Admittedly this is an early inning for the Bronze Age but still some tepid results, especially in the upper-mid range of grades, see below:

Long-Term returns and trend

  • Grade 9.4 returns positive +31.3%
  • Grade 9.2 returns a negative -15.3%
  • Grade 9.0 returns a negative -27.3%
  • Grade 8.5 returns a negative -18.6%
  • Grade 8.0 returns positive +26.7%
  • Grade 7.5 returns a negative -13.7%

Doctor Strange #1

Will this comic book shine like the Light of the Vishanti on profit, or will the Hoary Hosts of Hoggoth decimate your bank account? It appears there is a positive trend for this simulacrum of the very first Steven Strange appearance. This second series comic book Doctor Strange #1 has upper-grade profit potential saving the mystic bacon of this first appearance of the Mighty Aggamotto. The return trends in the higher-grades:

  • Grade 9.8 returns positive +28.2%
  • Grade 9.6 returns positive +23.2%
  • Grade 9.4 returns positive +31.3%

Strange Tales #110

The average Dr. Strange adventure is one that takes place outside of our dimensional time frame. There are so many creatures Strange has bested over the years that would make great villains. I know one of the potential villains is Nightmare. Apparently, the media hype has Nightmare appearing in the next movie. If that is indeed true you should pick up his first appearance Strange Tales #110. This book was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Nightmare is the demon who rules the Dream Dimension. Steven Strange often battled him throughout the series and he made an interesting foe. The only drawback is getting your hands on this Silver Age mega-key. The top book 9.6 has sold for $72,000 back in December 2014. The cheapest reasonable key is grade 2.5 at $1050. This might actually be worth it, the second movie is already slated and if it is a hit (high probability) perhaps this book will double.

  • Grade 9.6 return and trend positive +31.5%
  • Grade 9.0 returns a positive +47.9%
  • Grade 6.5 returns a positive +8.1%
  • Grade 8.5 has the biggest gain with +64%

These returns might not seem magical for a big Silver Age key, but long-term this book has been a winner. Perhaps it will continue on this trend as the new movie's rollout. By my estimation, they have at least four total movies for Strange. In addition, if successful they will do a prequel (whatever that might be). That gives us a 3 to 6-year time frame to own this book from this point. The all-seeing Eye of Agamotto predicts a highpoint for Doctor Strange #1 sometime in the future, usually, the third movie is the end of the truly logical ideas and when the studios usually turn it into a cash cow. Perhaps that would be a good time to unload Agamotto's first appearance.
