I'm sure you've all heard of the great Donny Cates, but have you read all of his stuff? Do you know the value of his work?

Donny Cates has certainly taken Marvel by storm. He offers a fresh voice in a medium that often sounds the same. Here's a quick rundown of some of my favorite Cates' series and their values.

Venom

This was the first time I read Venom and saw him as a real character all on his own. Not just a foil to Spider-man, but an actual well rounded character in his own right. This series has led to new additions including Knull, Dylan Brock, Sleeper, and Virus. Eddie Brock comes alive and allows Donny Cates to be at his best.

The hot issues from this series include:

#1: Donny Cates' first issue behind the wheel. 9.8 FMV of $55 for standard cover.

#3, the first appearance of Knull with a 9.8 FMV of $220 for the standard cover (though it will be rising shortly)

#7: first appearance of Dylan Brock. 9.8 FMV of $120 for standard cover

#25: first cameo appearance of Virus. 9.8 FMV of $70

Absolute Carnage

Since we're already talking about Venom, we might as well mention Carnage. In a fun universe event we get to see our favorite red-headed serial killer take the pages once more. There are some very cool carnage symbiotes all over the place and we also see Spidey and Venom team up fighting the real bad guys. While it doesn't bring the same level of depth that Venom does, it's certainly worth the read.

Thanos #13-18 and Annual #1

This was one of Cates' breakout hits. It's the first appearance of the Cosmic Ghost Rider who is one of the coolest new characters to come out of Marvel. The Thanos Wins storyline is so out there it somehow works. We aren't really sure exactly how, but it does. If you haven't given this a read yet, please do. You'll enjoy the ride.

Thanos #13: 9.8 FMV of $270

Donny CatesGuardians of the Galaxy

This series spawns straight out of the ending of Thanos Wins, but Cates seemed to have lost a bit of his momentum. There are still very cool moments in the series i.e. Rocket Racoon inside of a homemade Gundam suit, but it doesn't have the same wow factor his run on Thanos did. It's really too bad because looking at the Guardians of the Galaxy #1 cover, they look like the most powerful superteam that's ever existed. I'd give this one a read if you've already read most of Cates' other stuff.

Guardians of the Galaxy #1: 9.8 FMV of $40

Personal Favorite: Silver Surfer Black

This is far and away my favorite Donny Cates series. In the preface Cates dedicates his run to the late and great Stan Lee. His writing definitely holds up. What's even more incredible however, is the pairing with Tradd Moore who offers such a surreal visual aspect to the surfer that has never been done before. It's a feast for the eyes as panels almost bubble with color as the reader is warped through time and space with the Silver Surfer. Cates' voice is more restrained, using a type of internal monologue narration instead of expository dialogue, and it works very well. If you could only read a single book by Cates, make Silver Surfer Black the one.

Silver Surfer: Black #1: 9.8 FMV of the first print $75

(P.S. I haven't read Thor yet, or it'd be in here!)
