ARTIST BOB OKSNER DIES AT AGE 90

Artist Bob Oksner, best known for his work on DC Comics' humor titles, died on February 18 at age 90.

Paul Levitz, DC's President & Publisher, says, "Bob had the gift of transferring the twinkle in his eye to paper - whether it was capturing Bob Denver's hapless grin in a Dobie Gillis comic, the sexy wiggle of a pretty girl or a Jerry Lewis pratfall, he shared with his readers the moment in all its magic. In over four decades of art for DC he was all too rarely credited, but always respected by his peers and editors for his talent and wit."

Oksner broke into comics at the start of the Golden Age, working for several publishers before creating the comic strip Miss Cairo Jones in 1945. He began working for DC in the late 1940s with ALL STAR COMICS, GREEN LANTERN and THE FLASH. His talent for drawing humor and likenesses led to work on licensed titles including THE ADVENTURES OF BOB HOPE and THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS, as well as LEAVE IT TO BINKY, ANGEL AND THE APE and more. He also illustrated science fiction tales in MYSTERY IN SPACE and romance stories in GIRLS' LOVE STORIES, among other titles.

Oksner won the National Cartoonists Society Award in 1960 and 1961 the Shazam Award in 1970 for Best Pencil Artist (Humor Division). While working in comic books, Oksner continued with comic strips, on the I Love Lucy strip in the 1950s and his own creation, Soozie, in the late 1960s. He collaborated with Irwin Hasen on Dondi from 1969 through the strip's end in 1986.

In the 1970s, Oksner contributed artwork to SHAZAM, the Superman titles and others, including memorable stories starring Mary Marvel and Supergirl, and also became one of DC's top cover artists and an in-demand inker for pencillers including Curt Swan and Carmine Infantino. He retired in the 1980s.
