Darkseid - Forever People #1Who has the face of Jack Palance, the villainy of Adolf Hitler and the cunning of Richard Nixon? According to Jack Kirby, those are the personalities he used to create the ominous one himself, Darkseid. This Kirby creation is a Machiavelian villain with enough power to take on Superman and the Justice League.

Darkseid's physical powers are superhuman strength, speed, and durability. His energy manipulation is what really makes him dangerous: flight, immortality, life and death manipulation, teleportation, and even soul manipulation. Whew! That is exhausting reciting even an abridged version of his list of powers. Of course, with DC Comics, the ultimate villain would have to be multi-powered just to keep up with the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman. Can this manipulative villain make for a good speculation play when they finally unload this sucker on the public?

DarkseidForever People #1

This is Darkseid's first full appearance. Typically, the first full appearance has the most value as a key. But why Darkseid? Why invest in this character now when he isn't even on anyone's radar? That is exactly when you should be buying his first appearance prior to it becoming hyped. Sometimes you have to project far into the future on a key book to beat our ever-expanding population of fellow speculators. This is a good time to buy out of mind comic book keys. Everyone is focused now on Marvel Phase Four and the hype of the wrap up to the last Star Wars Skywalker saga. It is time to buy cheap and hold for a bit of Darkseid hype in the future.

Long-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $2,785 last sale June 2019 returns positive +55.9%
  • Grade 9.0 $288 last sale Sept 2019 returns positive +23.7%
  • Grade 6.5 $180 last sale Dec 2019 returns positive +46%
  • Grade 4.0 $51 last sale March 2018 returns positive +35.5%

The long-term returns from Forever People #1 are positively out of this world. Kirby created this book in February 1971. He did the editing and pencils by himself. Both Kirby and Marv Wolfman worked on the script. The book is a multi-key with the first appearance of the Forever People, the Kirby cover, the first full Darkseid, and the Darkseid storyline begins. The long-term numbers are as solid as a punch from Darkseid. What about the short-term?

DarkseidShort-Term

  • Grade 9.8 $2,785 last sale June 2019 returns positive +8.7%
  • Grade 9.0 $288 last sale Sept 2019 returns positive +27.8%
  • Grade 6.5 $180 last sale Dec 2019 returns positive +27.5%
  • Grade 5.0 $72 last sale August 2019 returns positive +7.7%

The short-term is equally impressive. I would try to pick up this book in the 8.0 grade. There have been 16 recent sales with a solid return. You could also go to the front of the pack with 9.8 grade for $2,800. Any way you size up the investment in this comic book, it makes money and continues to be profitable. No movie, no TV series, nada zip; then why does it have such Herculean returns?

Darkseid - Forever People #1Conclusion:

This book the Forever People #1  is a great bet short-term or long-term as speculation or investment. Considering Darkseid is kind of the main big villain in DC. This is similar to owning Thanos keys for Marvel. Buy now and sell before the eventual movie or TV series comes out. Besides who doesn't want to own the first appearance of a villain with the chin of Jack Palance?

Remember you want to buy when no one is thinking about this particular character. The supervillain is always ten moves ahead of the superheroes; buying well in advance of an appearance is a speculative move even Darkseid would be impressed by. Think of it as a stocking stuffer for the 2020 holiday season.
