Kevin Feige was back at the Disney D23 event on Saturday, September 10 with more MCU news. While the market didn’t react quite as much as it did with San Diego Comic-Con, there were some movers in the market. Let’s take a look at how some key issues reacted.

Thunderbolts

While Thunderbolts had been announced at San Diego Comic-Con, we didn’t yet know the lineup. Nearly all the cast was there at D23 as Feige announced the members of the Thunderbolts, led by Contessa Valentina Allegro de Fontaine.

The lineup consists of Winter Soldier, Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Taskmaster, and Ghost.

Sometimes collectors just need to be assured that a character has an ongoing part to play in the MCU and isn’t just appearing in a one-and-done role. Such is the case with David Harbour’s Red Guardian.

Six copies of Avengers #43, Red Guardian’s first appearance, have sold since Saturday. The highest sale was a 9.4 graded copy selling for $1,549 on eBay. It set a new record and bested the previous record holder in that grade by 12.2%.

While the lower grades didn’t set records, the news has helped this book turn the corner and begin to rise again.

The surprising winner, though, in terms of market reaction had to be Iron Man #219, the first appearance of Ghost.

While only four copies have sold since Saturday, a new record high price for a non-signature graded copy was set on Sunday when a 9.8 sold for a slashed $810. That smashes the old record of $479 by 52.2%.

Unfortunately, the market didn't react much at all to other Thunderbolts keys, including Inhumans #5Captain America #6, Strange Tales #159Avengers #196, or Captain America #354, and only moved the needle a tiny bit in terms of sales volume for Incredible Hulk #449.

Captain America: New World Order

The biggest winner of the day came when Kevin Feige announced that Tim Blake Nelson would be returning as the Leader in Captain America: New World Order.

The Leader’s first comic book appearance was in Tales to Astonish #63. While there were only five sales of this Silver Age key, four of them set records. A 9.2 graded copy sold on eBay on Sunday for $3,200, absolutely smashing the previous high of $700 by 357%!

Records were also set in the 9.0, 7.0, and 4.5 grades. The Leader has been rumored for a while and could play a prominent role in the MCU for a long time. Don’t expect this book to drop significantly in value any time soon.

The biggest surprise of the day came when Sabra was announced as a character in Captain America: New World Order. No one saw this coming, as evidenced by the paltry 89 graded copies of Incredible Hulk #256 - Sabra's first appearance - in the CGC census.

Eight sales have been recorded since Saturday. Needless to say, records were set in every grade. A 9.8 selling on Saturday for $900 on eBay set the new standard and beat the previous high by 82%. Expect this book to continue to rise at least until the trailer is released.

Considering the scarcity of graded copies, you might be better served chasing down a raw copy and having it graded; eBay is awash right now with raw copies.

We’ll be back tomorrow with more market reactions from the news coming out of D23!
